Southern African journalists have until July 31 to apply for the Third Annual Biko Woods Journalism Scholarships that combine an academic program with an assignment to a leading regional newspaper.
The scholarships seek to develop a democratic culture of vigorous and independent journalism on the African continent by fostering a stronger working relationship among regional journalists. The scholarships also seek to improve the status of journalists by involving them more closely in training and by expanding the ranks of media trainers.
Eight African journalists will be selected this year for the scholarships.
Successful candidates will attend a week-long media training course at the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism; spend a week with in a major South African newsroom and attend courses at a leading South African university during the final week.
The scholarships are open to all journalists working in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and neighboring countries. Selection will be through a competitive essay process. The deadline for applications is July 31.
The Biko Woods Scholarships honor the legacy of black consciousness writer and activist Steve Biko, and progressive anti-apartheid journalist Donald Woods.

Application forms and further details are available by fax from (+27-11) 484-2282, by telephone from (+27-11) 484-1765, or by e-mail.
