Call for entries – Submission deadline March 1, 2004
The San Francisco Black Film Festival will host the 6th annual film festival, June 9-13, 2004. We invite you to submit your film for the Melvin Van Peebles Maverick Award competition. Named for legendary producer and director Melvin Van Peebles, the Maverick award acknowledges emerging filmmakers. The winner will be flown to San Francisco as a guest of the festival and presented with the Maverick award during the Awards ceremony.

For five days, we will celebrate the cinema of African America and the African Cultural Diaspora screening more than seventy films, workshops, panel discussions, an awards ceremony and of course, parties

The San Francisco Black Film Festival will highlight films made by and about the Black experience with a strong emphasis on independent films (Filmmakers need not be of African descent, but should have an African or African American in a prominent role.). Films can be of any genre -drama, music videos, comedy, horror, adventure, animation, romance or science fiction, etc. We accept features, shorts and documentaries.

SFBFF sponsors two competitions; the Malvin Van Peebles Maverick Award, which is the overall winner and a winner in the best feature, best short, and best documentary categories. Films in competition should be copyrighted no earlier than January 1, 2003. The second competition is for screenplays with a Jury Award.
