Since its inception in 2011, Film Africa has gone from strength to strength bringing the best African cinema from across the continent and its diaspora to diverse UK audiences. Following a successful run of eight consecutive years, Film Africa will now be held biennially and the next festival edition will take place in November 2020.

But what of 2019, you may ask? In answer to this, and with great pleasure, we announce the launch of Film Africa Travel Grants 2019-2020. This pilot scheme will enable African filmmakers to present their work in the UK, develop new contact networks and reach new audiences.

Film Africa Travel Grants 2019-2020, delivered by the Royal African Society in partnership with the British Council, is a pilot scheme offering African filmmakers who are living and working on the continent the opportunity to travel to the UK to attend one of eight key international film festivals where their work has been invited to screen.

This pilot scheme is primarily aimed at filmmakers aged 18-35 working in short form film, but first and second feature directors will also be considered. Successful applicants may be awarded up to £2,500 to cover international travel, accommodation and subsistence costs.

The scheme will also afford successful applicants a bespoke programme of networking opportunities developed by the participating festivals and the British Council’s UK-based film team. Filmmakers’ work will also be promoted to our exclusive programming contacts in these key festivals.
