« Le colloque 2007 de la FIRT traitera des liens entre l’Afrique et le reste du monde, et de la manière dont le théâtre et les arts de la scène véhiculent et reflètent ces liens à travers la planète.
L’immense continent africain a toujours suscité des réactions aussi vives que largement contradictoires dans le reste du monde. Faisant souvent figure du berceau de l’humanité, il est longtemps passé pour l’une des régions les plus anciennes et les plus énigmatiques de la planète, pour le lieu par excellence où auraient élu domicile le mystère, les amours romantiques, le danger et l’aventure, pour le terreau où artistes et écrivains seraient allés puiser leur inspiration. En même temps subsiste l’impression vivace que le potentiel intellectuel et culturel du peuple africain n’est quasiment pas exploité, qu’on a longtemps ignoré sa véritable histoire ou qu’on ne l’a perçue que d’un point de vue colonialiste, que ses pays et leurs habitants sont victimes de catastrophes naturelles, d’âpres luttes politiques, de pratiques de sorcellerie, de problèmes dus à l’analphabétisme, à l’intolérance, à la pauvreté, à la maladie et à la guerre – l’expérience de la colonisation se révélant de plus en plus un facteur prépondérant de cet état.
À partir de là, le colloque entend se pencher sur les multiples façons dont l’idée de l’Afrique a, au cours des siècles, infiltré et influencé l’art, la littérature et le spectacle vivant, tant à l’intérieur de l’Afrique que dans des pays non-africains, à travers l’œuvre d’artistes, d’écrivains et de gens de théâtre. Mais aussi bien, à l’inverse, le colloque prendra en compte la manière dont des idées issues d’autres continents et d’autres cultures sont devenues partie intégrante des arts, des structures de croyance, de l’histoire et de l’écriture d’une grande partie de l’Afrique, cette présence se faisant sentir partout, depuis les thèmes jusqu’aux formes, procédés et systèmes d’évaluation dans les arts.
C’est ce rapport symbiotique entre le continent africain et le reste du monde qui constitue le thème général du colloque, et dont découle nombre de sujets de discussion passionnants. »
Parmi les problèmes clés, on recensera : Les notions d' »Afrique » et de « théâtre et spectacle africains », Danse et spectacle, Oralité, récit et spectacle, Masques et spectacle, Rituel et théâtre, Les lieux de spectacle, Le caractère éphémère du spectacle vivant, La découverte et la récupération d’un passé oublié, L’application et l’impact du théâtre, Artistes, praticiens et pratiques en Afrique, La diaspora africaine, L’influence de formes et de thèmes africains, Théories contemporaines du théâtre et du spectacle, L’image (ou l’idée) de l’Afrique.

« The main focus of the 2007 IFTR/FIRT conference is the relationship of Africa to the rest of the world and the way this is driven by and reflected in theatre and performance across the globe.
The vast continent of Africa has always excited strong and widely contradictory responses in the rest of the world. Often referred to as the cradle of mankind, it has long been regarded as one of the oldest and most mysterious regions of the world, the seat of mystery, romance, danger and adventure, the source material for artists and writers. At the same time there is a strong sense that the intellectual and cultural potential of the people of Africa is virtually untapped, its true history long ignored or only seen from the colonialist perspective, its countries and peoples ravaged by natural disasters, violent political struggles, witchcraft, illiteracy, intolerance, poverty, illness and war -with the colonial experience being a decisive factor over the years.
Against this background it is suggested that the conference consider the many ways in which, over the centuries, the idea of Africa has pervaded and influenced the art, literature and performing arts of the Africa itself, as well as the artistic output of artists, writers and performers in the non-African world. Conversely it also refers to the way in which ideas from other continents and cultures have become an integral part of the arts, belief structures, history and writing of much of the continent – a presence felt in everything from artistic themes to forms, processes and evaluative systems.
It is this symbiotic relationship between the African continent and the rest of the world that is the broad theme to be addressed, a theme which offers a number of very intriguing points for debate. »
Among the key issues are: the notions « Africa » and « African theatre and performance », dance and performance, orality, narrative and performance, masks and performance, ritual and theatre, venues, the ephemerality of live performance, uncovering and recovering a forgotten past, applied theatre and the impact of theatre, the artists, practitioners and practices of Africa, the African diaspora, the influence of African forms and themes, contemporary theories of theatre and performance, the image (or idea) of Africa.
