Each year the GoDown recognizes the contribution of African women in the arts through a festival organized and hosted by the GoDown, called Sigalala. Women visual artists, poets, choreographers, writers and musicians are all celebrated. Last year, the star artist was Bi Kidude, 97-year old performer of Zanzibari « unyago » song and dance. The GoDown hosted a photo-exhibition of Bi-Kidudes journey to star dom named’As Old As My Tongue.’ Also featured were local women artists representing music genres ranging from traditional to afro-fusion to hip-hop.
This year we are inviting top women artists to mount an exhibition celebrating our rich diversity and creativity to be opened on Thursday the 25th October 2007. This exhibition will also mark the launch of the Sigalagala Festival. We have invited various women including Annabel Wanjiku, Eunice Wadu, Mirium Kyambi, Maggie Otieno, Emily Odongo
On the music side, local participation will include Achieng Abura, Kaz, Nyota Ndogo, Suzanna Owiyo, Valerie Kimani, Carol Atemi, June Wanjiru, and Suzanne Gachukia. The star act will be Congolese singer Mbilia Bel, whose performance career has seen her rise from an accomplished dancer, with the Congolese maestro Tabu Ley, to a singer/musician in her own right. Mbilia Bel will perform 2 shows at the GoDown, October 26 & 27, accompanied by a band of 12 artists comprising instrumentalists, back-up vocalists and dancers.
