From 21st to 26th April 2008, an important event would be held on the
African continent – the organization of the 1st International Conference on African Culture and Development (ICACD 2008) in Kumasi, Ghana. This conference is designed to draw attention to the missing link in the futile attempts to develop the African continent – culture. This is clearly illustrated in the 1995 report of the World Commission on Culture and
Development: « Development divorced from its human or
cultural context is growth without a soul. Economic development in its full Flowering is a part of a people’s culture ».
ICACD Overview
« Those who ignore culture are doomed to failure in Africa. Those who understand culture can find new ways to succeed. » -Commission For Africa Report (2005) Africa’s slow pace of growth and development is one of the most disturbing realities of our time. Over the years, there have been several attempts from local and international circles to draw and implement workable programs and policies that will spark-off the development of the African continent.
It is interesting to note however that, in all the programs intended to ignite Africa’s development, culture and the way of life of Africans has been a missing ingredient and that may explain why these programs did not yield the intended results.
It is therefore imperative that, further research and exchange of ideas are conducted to identify how the social and cultural institutions of Africa can support African political institutions to bring about the desired change in Africa. For this reason, the ICACD secretariat together with other collaborators is extending to you an invitation to the International Conference on African Culture and Development (ICACD 2008) to assist in the efforts to push forward the idea of societal and cultural considerations in drawing and implementing development programs in Africa
