Music Crossroads is a unique youth empowerment through music program, initiated in 1995 by Jeunesses Musicales International and has ever since created opportunities and tools for an increasing number of young musicians in Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Through 40 festivals, workshops and daily activities in the Training Centers, Music Crossroads have transformed the lives of many previously unknown young bands in the five countries; in 2009, the program encompassed some 5.000 young musicians and 150.000 audiences.

The InterRegional Festival (IRF) is the culmination of the Music Crossroads year, for local organizers and for the young musicians. Through Local and National Festivals, workshops and special trainings, the nuts and bolts have been tightened and the IRF participating bands are ready to present their creative and vocational achievements for big audiences – together with guest bands from South Africa, Ghana, Belgium and Sweden.

The 10 competing bands, two from each country, are assessed by an International Jury of professionals from the music industry, which will, after the two days festival in Bagamoyo and by the end of the Saturday Finale 17 July, announce one IRF winning band that will receive extensive training, promotion and a tour in Europe 2011 – as well as 2 individual musicians that will participate to JMI’s Ethno Music Meetings in Denmark and Croatia: we’re looking at some seriously good and diverse music from Southern Africa’s stars of tomorrow, and some serious excitement in TaSUBa!

On Sunday, the 10 competing bands and 5 guest bands will make a special performance in the Makumbusho Cultural Center to give the Dar audience an opportunity to experience this massive gathering of talents: truly a World Cup of music!
