Exhibition « For a Better World »
Viewing the World Social Forum 2011 in Dakar through art

Français

Four young African artists give a personal account of this year’s World Social Forum in Dakar through their art. Paint brushes, cameras and microphones are used to convey the hopes, perspectives and aspirations of young Africans today. AfricAvenir International e.V. will host the exhibition « For a Better World » from 23 June to 14 July 2011.

Led by Dr. Youma Fall, curator of the Dak’Art Biennial for Contemporary African Art, young artists from different art schools in Dakar came together to look into the themes discussed at this year’s World Social Forum, using art as a means to portray their views and impressions. Themes discussed at the Forum, such as migration, the interplay between art and science as well as the coming together of a most diverse range of people, opinions and expectations are taken up by the artists through five video-works, a comic strip and over 30 photos. The atmosphere and the activities on the ground are captured, assimilated and analysed.

Background:

The World Social Forum 2011 took place in the senegalese capital Dakar, the second World Social Forum being hosted on African soil after the 2007 Forum in Nairobi/Kenya. In February 2011 various representatives of social movements and civil society initiatives came together under the motto « a different world is possible » to discuss alternative development strategies and possibilities for South-South cooperation as well as processes of social transformation.

Alongside the exhibition there will be presentations, workshops and film-screenings.

The vernissage will be on Thursday, 23 June 2011 at 7pm in the presence of the curator Dr. Youma Fall.
