The 15th South African Women’s Arts Festival (SAWAF) will be hosted by The Playhouse Company in Durban between 29 July and 14 August 2011.
Comprising a compelling mix of drama, dialogue, open-mic dialogue and poetry, dance, music and the visual arts, SAWAF highlights the impact women make in our country.
« While SAWAF offers a wealth of exciting performances, it also presents invaluable opportunities to debate and discuss important issues that affect the lives of contemporary women, and indeed our society as a whole, » says Playhouse Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Linda Bukhosini.
This year’s festival components include: Rajesh Gopie’s epic The Coolie Odyssey, running in the Drama until 7 August; award-winning actress Shika Budhoo’s acclaimed debut one-hander, Shika-Land! spotlighting five characters named Shika, playing in the Loft from 5 – 7 August; and SAWAF 2011’s gala production, Winds of Change in aid of Dance for a Cure, presented in the Playhouse Opera Theatre on Friday 5 August at 19h30. This gala event combines stunning fashion design with live music and song, and will be interpreted by a host of stellar local dancers, performing to Astor Piazolla’s breathtakingly beautiful Four Seasons.
Other SAWAF attractions include: not-to-be-missed free Open Mic Dialogue and Poetry sessions in the Drama Theatre on Saturday 6 August at 1pm and 3pm respectively, chaired by celebrity poet, Lebo Mashile and Ukhozi FM presenter Bongani Mavuso, featuring an inspiring line-up participants; a big-stage Gospel Concert in the Opera on Sunday 7 August at 3pm, featuring headliners Hlengiwe Mhlaba and Pastor Benjamin Dube, supported by gospel groups, Abalindi and Abanqobi, and hosted by uKhozi FM celebrity, Dudu Khoza; Threads, Moving Into Dance’s award-winning dance drama, starring poet Lebo Mashile and seven Dancers, in the Drama on 12 and 13 August; and an art exhibition by KZN women artists and crafters.
