Sembene tirelessly devoted his life to intellectually and artistically fight against any form of oppression and social injustice.
In a 2003 interview, Sembene stated: « I will never kneel. I have a job to do and no one assigned it to me. I need to talk to my people and that, I cannot do in hiding. »

*Miami’s 2nd Africana Film Festival is a tribute to Ousmane Sembene (1923-2007), the « father » of African cinema.*

The festival entitled « The Worlds of Sembene » is meant to serve both as an opportunity to open up new inroads in the criticism of Sembene’s artistic achievement and address the broader question of the place of African filmic creation in the broader context of European and American post-war movements.

The festival will help reposition the scholarship on Sembene and will also be a learning opportunity for Miami university students and the community in general.

The festival will be held at the Middletown, Hamilton and Oxford campuses:
