Donia Massoud (Egypt)
Donia Massoud has for the past two years been conducting research on traditional songs of Egypt. She was able to collect songs from different parts of Egypt:- from upper Egypt, Alexandria, the Suez Canal area and from the desert. Donia revives these mostly unknown songs from their original sites and presents them in her performances.
PERFORMANCES: 6 July, 3.30pm and 7 July, 8.00pm
Karima Mansour and Beatrice Kombi (Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire)
Karima Mansour is an accomplished Egyptian contemporary dancer and choreographer. For the Festival she will be joined by Beatrice Kombi, Tche Tche’s lead dancer and choreographer from Cote d’Ivoire. In Zanzibar they meet to present their collaboration result « Solo ». This will be the first time that Karima presents this dance piece, which Beatrice specially choreographed for her in front of an African audience.
PERFORMANCE: 9 July, 8.00pm
Saher Khalifa (Palestine/Jordan)
The Palestinian singer and actress will present traditional Arabic songs from Palestine, Jordan, Tunisia and Egypt. As well as her varied vocal repertoire on the traditional songs, Saher is the lead singer of the Jordanian contemporary music ensemble « Rum ».
PERFORMANCES: 7 July, 3.30pm and 8 July, 8.00pm
Salma El Assal (Sudan)
Rootsical and soulful, another of north Africa’s great female vocalists is Salama El Assal, who presents traditional and popular Sudanese songs. Please be sure to witness the magic of Saalma’s voice, showing how over the centuries the Arab and African cultures have merged in Sudan.
PERFORMANCES: 6 July, 4.00pm and 7 July, 8.30pm
Sherin El-Ansary (Egypt)
A fantastic story-teller, who will be presenting her adaptations of stories from A Thousand and One Nights. Sherin has created storytelling performances since 1994. In’96 she decided to drop acting and dedicate her life to the profession of storytelling. « I’m fascinated by the power of the precise word combined with a simple gesture in conveying clear images and pure emotions », she says.
She has presented shows more than a hundred times in Europe, USA and within the Arab World. The Festival of the Dhow Countries is proud to host Sherin El-Ansary’s first performance in sub-Saharan Africa. In Zanzibar, Sherin’s shows will be geared to adults (accompanied children are also very welcome). Performed mostly in English, including some Arabic
language for atmosphere and authenticity.
