Portrait de la société tunisienne contemporaine à travers le regard d'une jeune orpheline prénommée Aziza qui, avec sa famille d'adoption, quitte le vieux quartier arabe de Tunis pour venir s'installer dans de nouveaux logements à la périphérie de la ville.



La Tunisie de 1980 : un pays en développement, une société en pleine mutation. Une famille quitte la Médina de Tunis pour s'installer dans une des nouvelles cités populaires à la périphérie de la Capitale. Poussé par son fils Ali un petit affairiste, le vieil artisan si Béchir a accepté de vendre sa maison pour, croit-il en acquérir une autre, plus moderne. Ils emménagent donc dans une nouvelle demeureavec Aziza, une nièce recueillie depuis la prime enfance.



Un nouveau quartier, de nouveaux voisins, un nouveau quotidien, pour le vieil homme c'est un immense bouleversement et la solitude. Aziza, elle, élevée dans le silence et la pénombre des vieilles maisons de la Médina, découvre d'autres lieux, d'autre gens, se fait une amie, Aïcha. Les jours passent en tous points semblables rythmés par les tâches domestiques, les espoirs et les échecs lamentables d'Ali… L'arrivée soudaine d'un "Emir du pétrole" va chambarder une fois encore leur vie, mais pas comme on l'espère naïvement en croyant à la magie de l'or noir… L'Emir repartira… avec Aïcha, attirée irrésistiblement par le mirage d'une vie facile et, qui sait, d'une revanche qu'elle attribue à la bienveillance de la "Lumière céleste" que les croyants attendent le matin du 27e jour de Ramadan.

The days pass in every way the same, punctuated by domestic chores, Ali's hopes and lamentable failures… The sudden arrival of an "Oil Emir" will once again turn their lives upside down, but not in the way we think. naively hopes by believing in the magic of black gold… The Emir will leave… with Aïcha, irresistibly attracted by the mirage of an easy life and, who knows, of a revenge that she attributes to the benevolence of the “Heavenly Light” that believers await on the morning of the 27th day of Ramadan.
