En 1971, Sarah Maldoror, alors toute jeune réalisatrice, passe trois mois en Guinée Bissau sur l’archipel Bijagós afin de réaliser un film que l’Office Nationale du Commerce et de l’Industrie Cinématographique algérien (ONCIC) lui a commandé pour documenter la lutte du PAIGC (Parti africain pour l’indépendance de la Guinée et du Cap-Vert) contre le pouvoir colonial et pour l’indépendance. Suivant les combattants d’un village, son film est centré sur Awa, une jeune femme qui a rejoint le parti.
Les prises de vues alternent les femmes portant fusils et même bombes et leur travail domestique.
À son retour, dès le premier montage, qui donnait un rôle trop important aux femmes dans la guerrilla, elle est expulsée d’Algérie par l’armée, et les bobines lui sont confisquées. Elles n’ont jamais été retrouvées.

Mathieu Kleyebe Abonnenc lui a consacré une exposition et prépare un film long métrage : A la recherche d’Awa (Prix Meurice pour l’art contemporain 2011/2012).

In 1970, Sarah Maldoror, then a young filmmaker, spent three months in Guinea-Bissau in order to shot a film for the Algerian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Upon her return, and after a disagreement with the Algerian authorities concerning the final editing of the film, Sarah Maldoror was expelled from Algeria and the film negatives were confiscated and lost have never been found.
