ZELAL est une invitation à un voyage singulier en terre égyptienne, une plongée au coeur de l’univers de la psychiatrie et de la « folie ». Il propose au spectateur de partager l’enfermement quotidien de ceux qui ont « basculé » de l’autre côté du miroir de la société. Un univers de lenteur et de torpeur où la temporalité quotidienne est soumise aux ouvertures et aux fermetures des portes. En allant à la rencontre de ces fous ordinaires que la société égyptienne rejette, c’est une mise à l’épreuve du regard et des représentations du spectateur auxquels le film nous convie.

ZELAL is an invitation to delve into one of Egypt’s most shuttered regions: the world of psychiatry and « madness ». The film has been shot in two psychiatric hospitals. The hospitals end up becoming the only place patients can conceive of – not because they truly are « crazy » but because they fear the outside world which cast them there. Those who leave often come back, rejected yet again by society. ZELAL is a foray into the world of these outcasts and social lepers. Meeting the ordinary madmen and women banished to these mental institutions by Egyptian society is more than just a journey into their shadow world. It forces viewers to put their own preconceptions and interpretations to the test. It is a way to remind ourselves that freedom is precarious in a society that does not tolerate difference.

ZELAL si addentra in una delle regioni più inaccessibili d’Egitto: il mondo della psichiatria e della « pazzia ». Il film è ambientato in due ospedali psichiatrici. Per i pazienti costretti a viverci, il manicomio rappresenta l’unico luogo possibile – non perché siano « matti » davvero, ma perché temono quel mondo esterno che li ha voluti internare. Anche chi viene dimesso prima o poi vi fa ritorno, respinto ancora una volta dalla società. ZELAL è un’incursione nella vita degli emarginati e lebbrosi sociali. Incontrare i malati mentali che la società egiziana ha confinato in manicomio non significa semplicemente osservare a distanza quel mondo nell’ombra: è un viaggio che costringe lo spettatore a mettere in discussione convinzioni e preconcetti, ricordandogli quanto sia precaria la libertà in un paese che non tollera la diversità.
