Ce film à grand spectacle de 1916 est l’une des premières fictions tournées en Afrique du sud. Il raconte l’histoire du Grand Trek des Boers à la fin des années 1830. De Voortrekkers s’achève sur une reconstitution de la bataille de Blood River (1838) où quelques centaines d’Afrikaners battirent plusieurs milliers de Zoulous. Rappelant ainsi une période particulièrement conflictuelle de leur histoire, le film est vénéré par les Afrikaners. Durant des décennies, il fut montré lors de chaque commémoration de la bataille de Blood River.

This 1916 epic film was one of the first South African dramatic film productions. It tells the story of the Boers’ Great Trek at the end of the 30s, concluding with a reconstruction of the 1838 Battle of Blood River, where a few hundred Afrikaners defeated several thousand Zulus. Commemorating as it did their view of a highly contentious period of history, the film came to be revered by Afrikaners. It enjoyed a long after-life in South African classrooms and was shown annually on the date of the Battle of Blood River.

Esta película épica rodada en 1916 es una de las primeras producciones dramáticas realizadas en Sudáfrica. Cuenta la historia del gran « Trek » (marcha) que los boers llevaron a cabo en la década de 1830. Termina con una reconstrucción de la batalla de Blood River (Río de la sangre), donde unos cuantos cientos de afrikáners vencieron a miles de zulúes en 1838.
