Pacification en Algérie est documentaire pédagogique en deux parties d'André Gazut, témoin engagé de son époque.
Ce pourrait être un frère ou un père. La voix est paisible, plus très jeune. Elle invite à remonter le temps dans la France métropolitaine des années 1950, sur fond de "troubles" en Algérie. Le climat est restitué : influence de l'Eglise catholique (la messe du dimanche est encore la norme, y compris pour beaucoup de non-croyants), hantise du communisme international (la "main de Moscou" est partout), récente perte de l'Indochine et soubresauts de la IVe République… La voix est celle du réalisateur de ce documentaire en deux parties (déjà diffusé dans "Les mercredis de l'histoire" en février 2003), André Gazut, témoin engagé de cette époque, et qui ne s'en cache pas.
Il nous fait partager le cheminement et les désillusions de ses 18 ans et nous apprend que, en 1956, il désertera, plutôt que d'aller combattre en Algérie avec des méthodes qu'il croyait réservées, dit-il, à l'Allemagne nazie. Au lieu de livrer des témoignages bruts, il les remet en perspective c'est l'intérêt principal de son travail.
Pédagogique, son film s'adresse en priorité à ceux qui en savent peu sur la guerre d'Algérie et ces années-là. A ceux qui ignorent que la brisure entre la France et l'Algérie ne date pas du 1er novembre 1954 mais du 8 mai 1945 (date des massacres de Sétif). A ceux qui ont oublié le rôle de Paul Teitgen, de Germaine Tillion, ou du général Jacques de Bollardière, magnifique figure à laquelle André Gazut consacra, en 1974, un film qui fut boycotté censuré ? par les télévisions généralistes en France.
Pacification en Algérie rappelle nombre de faits, comme la réintroduction, en 1955, d'un décret aboli par de Gaulle à la libération de Paris, relatif à la responsabilité collective ; l'ampleur du phénomène des camps de regroupement ou les mensonges éhontés de Guy Mollet, ainsi que les silences de l'aumônerie militaire… Où finit la soumission à l'autorité ? Où commence la responsabilité de l'individu ? André Gazut interpelle chacun de nous. Et le livre que Jean-Pierre Vittori a tiré de ce film, Le Choix des larmes (Ed. du Félin/Arte Editions), en est l'admirable prolongement.

It could be a brother or a father. The voice is peaceful, not very young anymore. It invites us to go back in time to metropolitan France in the 1950s, against a backdrop of "troubles" in Algeria. He shares with us the journey and disillusionment of his 18 years and tells us that, in 1956, he will desert, rather than go and fight in Algeria with methods that he believed were reserved, he says, for Nazi Germany. Instead of delivering raw testimonies, he puts them into perspective, which is the main interest of his work.
Educational, his film is aimed primarily at those who know little about the Algerian War and those years. To those who do not know that the break between France and Algeria does not date from November 1, 1954 but from May 8, 1945 (the date of the Sétif massacres). Where does individual responsibility begin? André Gazut challenges each of us. And the book that Jean-Pierre Vittori made from this film, Le Choix des larmes (Ed. du Félin/Arte Editions), is an admirable extension of it.
