Robert Sobukwe était un géant, un homme dont le destin était de changer la vie des gens, et, avec Mandela, Biko et Luthuli, il demeure l’une des figures les plus influentes de l’histoire de l’Afrique du Sud. Même si, contrairement à ces autres autres héros mentionnés, Sobukwe est, largement, un combattant oublié de la liberté. Fondateur du Congrès Pan-africain en 1959, ses convictions fortes ainsi que sa résistance active inspirèrent des générations de Sud Africains, et beaucoup d’organisations engagées dans le combat anti-apartheid struggle, notamment le Black Consciousness Movement.
Il dirige les protestations telles celle de Sharpeville, un moment historique qui conduira à son arrestation puis une détention longue de neuf ans pour laquelle le régime raciste votera un amendement spécial devenu célèbre sous le nom de Clause Sobukwe Clause. Ce film (avec des reconstitutions historiques) est un voyage à travers la vie d’un des héros auxquels le pays a omis de rendre hommage à la hauteur de sa stature.

Robert Sobukwe was a giant, a man destined to change people’s lives, and, alongside Mandela, Biko and Luthuli, he stands as one of the most influential figures in the history of South Africa. However, unlike these other heroes, Sobukwe is, largely, a forgotten freedom fighter. Founder of the Pan Africanist Congress in 1959, his strong convictions and active resistance inspired generations of South Africans, and many organisations involved in the anti-apartheid struggle, notably the Black Consciousness Movement.
He lit the fire for protests such as that at Sharpeville, an historic moment that led to his arrest and subsequent nine-year long detainment under a special amendment that became known as the Sobukwe Clause. Sobukwe started a movement that crippled the apartheid economy to such an extent that the American Chamber of Commerce had to bail it out to the tune of £100 million. It was the ripple created by the stone Sobukwe cast that became the tidal wave which finally sank the apartheid ship. This fi lm is a journey through
the life of one of the country’s most unsung heroes.
