Portrait du légendaire « Hôtel Oloffson » à Port-au-Prince, Haïti, ou Graham Greene a écrit et situe son roman « Les Comédiens ». Un de ses habitués, l’écrivain américain Herbert Gold, l’appelle « l’Hôtel Chelsea des Caraïbes ». En Janvier 2010, l’agréable villa blanche a miraculeusement survécu au désastreux tremblement de terre. Nous rencontrerons quelque-uns de ses invités, pour la plupart des écrivains, artistes et réalisateurs connus : Charles Najman, Joergen Leth, Cameron Brohman. Ils rencontrent des amis Haïtiens : Edwige Danticat, Issa et Mano El Saieh, Andre Pierre, Aubelin Jolicoeur, Batraville. Le directeur de l’Oloffson, Richard Morse, nous emmène dans une cérémonie Vaudoo excitante à Jacmel et au musée Vaudoo de Madame Lehmann à Pétion-ville. Un mélange d’images de l’hôtel avant et après le tremblement de terre évoque un portrait fascinant de cet endroit magique et la culture vibrante de la scène culturelle Haïtienne, sans pour autant négliger les terribles conditions de vie en Haïti.

La réalisatrice Uli Aumüller avait commencé à tourner en 2003 un documentaire sur cet hôtel culte, mais n’avait pu le mener à bien suite à la guerre civile de 2004. Alma Barkey a repris une partie des séquences tournées alors, et a retrouvé plusieurs des protagonistes.

Portrait of the legendary « Hotel Oloffson » in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where Graham Greene set and wrote his novel « The Comedians. » One of its regulars, the American writer Herbert Gold, calls it the « Chelsea Hotel » of the Caribbean. In January 2010, the lovely white villa miraculously survived the disastrous earthquake. We meet some of its guests, most of them writers, artists, and filmmakers: Charles Najman, Joergen Leth, and Cameron Brohman. During their stay, these guests make Haitian friends: Edwidge Danticat, Issa and Mano El Saieh, André Pierre, Aubelin Jolicoeur, Batraville. The manager of the Oloffson, Richard Morse, takes us to an exciting voodoo ceremony in Jacmel and to Madame Lehmann’s voodoo museum in Pétionville. A mixture of footage of the hotel and Haiti before and after the earthquake evokes a fascinating picture of this magical place and of the vibrant Haitian cultural scene, while taking into account the dire living conditions in Haiti.

Auf den Hügeln der haitianischen Hauptstadt Port-au-Prince versteckt sich in einem Park im Schatten hinter Palmen eine weiße Villa mit Verzierungen, Türmchen und Giebeln wie aus einem kitschigen Märchenfilm. Das „Hotel Oloffson » ist ein Ort mit Geschichte – und zahllosen Geschichten. Von Port-au-Prince ist nach dem verheerenden Erdbeben im Januar 2010 nicht viel übrig geblieben. Das legendäre Hotel aber hat wie durch ein Wunder überlebt. HOTEL HAITI taucht ein in die Geschichten, die sich um das Hotel, seine Besitzer und seine Gäste ranken und erzählt von der wechselvollen Geschichte Haitis im 20. Jahrhundert.
