Okonkwo est un « homme fort » à Umuofia, un village ibo, au Nigéria. Il va tomber en déchéance et son mode de vie tribal sera détruit par l’arrivée de missionaires européens agressifs.
Les villageois ibos se cotisent afin d’envoyer un des leurs s’instruire en Angleterre et Obi est choisi : il est le petit-fils de Okonkwo.
Son éducation occidentale l’a éloigné de ses racines africaines et il fait désormais partie de l’élite dirigeante dont il trouve la corruption répugnante.
Revenu comme fonctionnaire à Lagos, en tant qu’Assistant Administratif de l’Inspecteur des Ecoles, il tombe amoureux de Clara, une Osu : se marier avec une personne d’une autre culture est un tabous qu’il devra affronter.

Okonkwo is a « strong man » of Umuofia, an Ibo village in Nigeria. He falls from grace with the tribal world ; his world is destroyed with the arrival of aggressive European missionaries.
The Ibo villagers pooled their money to send one native son off to England to be educated and Obi was chosen: he is Okonkwo’s grandson.
His foreign education has separated him from his African roots and made him parts of a ruling elite whose corruption he finds repugnant.
Returned to a prestigious job with the civil service in Lagos, as the Administrative Assistant to the Inspector of Schools, he is in love with Clara, an Osu, one of the socio-religious outcasts.
