L’île de Socotra, située au large de la Somalie, fut longtemps un territoire fabuleux et plus récemment un lieu stratégique de la politique internationale. Le film, dont le récit se déroule dans ce territoire du bout du monde, connu dans l’antiquité pour abriter les phénix et les Rocs (oiseaux fabuleux de la mythologie arabe), relate l’un des voyages du fils du dernier sultan de l’île, en route avec sa caravane de chameaux vers les villages de l’intérieur. Autour du feu, les nomades se racontent les histoires plus ou moins légendaires, qui se transmettent de génération en génération… Dans ce surprenant film d’observation ethnographique, le choix esthétique du noir et blanc nous ramène non seulement aux temps anciens, où les légendes étaient vraies et les gens les gardaient en vie en les croyant, mais aussi au temps des premiers explorateurs de cinéma, lorsqu’ils filmaient leurs « travelogues » exotiques pour les présenter à un public avide de découvertes. Introduction à un monde disparu depuis longtemps, le film garde, jusqu’à sa dernière image, le sens d’un mystère inaccessible.

The film is the story of a trip to the remote island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean, through the tales of its people we live their experiences into a extraordinary conditions of the place: the exotic rich and endemic flora and fauna and special nature. Without any bay or natural port and surrounded by reefs, Socotra is isolated during the monsoon when is imposible to land. This isolation has preserved a unique environment.
The Socotrans of today know their own legends but have forgotten those of the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, neither do they remember the stories recounted by Renaissance travellers.

The island of Socotra, located off the coast of Somalia, was long a legendary territory and more recently a strategic place in international politics. The film, whose story unfolds in this land at the other end of the world, known in antiquity for sheltering phoenixes and Rocs (legendary birds of Arab mythology), recounts a trip made by the son of the last sultan of the island, who is heading towards the interior villages with his camel train. Around the fire, the nomads tell each other legendary stories that are transmitted from generation to generation… In this surprising film of ethnographical observation, the aesthetic choice of black and white not only takes us back to ancient times-when the legends were true and people kept them alive by believing in them-but also to the time of cinema’s first explorers, who would film their exotic « travelogues » so as to present them to audiences hungry for discovery. An introduction to a long-disappeared world, the film keeps the sense of an inaccessible mystery until its final image.

Die vor Somalia gelegene Insel Socotra war lange ein mythisches Territorium, das jüngst auch neue Bedeutung in der internationalen politischen Strategie erhalten hat. Der Film spielt an diesem abgeschiedenen Ort, der in der Antike als Heimat des Phönix und des Vogels Roch, ein Fabelwesen aus der arabischen Mythologie, bekannt war, und erzählt von einer der Reisen des Sohnes des letzten Sultans der Insel, der mit seiner Kamelkarawane auf dem Weg zu den Dörfern im Landesinneren ist. Am Feuer erzählen sich die Nomaden Geschichten, die manchmal Legenden sind und von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben werden. Der überraschende, beobachtende, ethnografische Film wurde in Schwarzweiss gedreht und versetzt uns mit dieser Entscheidung nicht nur in Zeiten, als die Legenden wahr waren und die Menschen sie durch ihren Glauben daran am Leben hielten – er befördert uns auch in die Zeit der ersten Abenteurer der Filmkunst, die mit ihren exotischen ‘travelogues’ das nach Entdeckungen lechzende Publikum in Atem hielten. Als Einführung in eine längst verschwundene Welt wahrt der Film bis zum letzten Bild eine Aura des undurchdringlichen Geheimnisses.
