« Qui est votre grand-père ? » Lors d’un rituel annuel Mossi qui prend place à Ouéguédo au Burkina Faso, on relate les histoires des ancêtres en langage tambouriné. « Qui est votre grand-père ? », lance le maître de cérémonie au chef de tribu et tous ceux présent, après le sacrifice rituel d’une bête. « Qui est votre grand-père ? » En réponse, le ‘benda’ nomme les noms des ancêtres et raconte les anecdotes qu’on leur prête, en rythme. L’histoire, orale, se transmet ainsi de génération en génération.
Si le projet du film s’inspire des écrits et des études de terrain de l’anthropologue japonais Junzo Kawada, le résultat est étonnament peu académique. Jouant du montage des images pour trouver une forme commune entre le geste cinématographique et le rite documenté, l’expérience sensorielle l’emporte ici sur le savoir dans une fusion du rythme et des mots. On ne comprendra pas tout ce qui se passe à l’écran, et comment pourrait-on ? Who is Your Grandfather ? sonne alors comme un film ethnographique faisant ses adieux à la connaissance scientifique par le cinéma.

Although the idea for the film was inspired by the writings and field studies of the Japanese anthropologist Junzo Kawada, the result is, surprisingly, scarcely academic. Playing with the image editing to find a shared form between the cinematographical gesture and the documented rite, here it is the sensorial experience that takes precedence over knowledge in a fusion of rhythm and words. We will not understand everything that happens on screen, and, how could we? Who is Your Grandfather? thus sounds like an anthropological film saying its goodbyes to scientific knowledge through the medium of cinema itself.

« Wer ist Euer Grossvater? » Bei einem jährlichen in Oueguedo in Burkina Faso stattfindenden Mossi-Ritual werden die Geschichten der Vorfahren in der Trommelsprache erzählt. « Wer ist Euer Grossvater? », fragt der Zeremonienmeister den Stammeshäuptling und alle Anwesenden nach der rituellen Opferung eines Tieres. « Wer ist Euer Grossvater? » Als Antwort nennt der’Benda’ die Namen der Vorfahren und erzählt im Rhythmus die Anekdoten, die ihnen zugeschrieben wurden. Die Geschichte wird mündlich von Generation zu Generation überliefert.
Obwohl das Filmprojekt von den Schriften und Feldstudien des japanischen Anthropologen Junzo Kawada inspiriert wurde, ist das Ergebnis erstaunlicherweise nicht sehr akademisch. Der Film spielt mit einer Montage von Bildern, um eine gemeinsame Form zwischen der filmischen Geste und dem dokumentierten Ritual zu finden, in einer Fusion aus Rhythmus und Worten wird der Sinneserfahrung Vorrang vor dem Wissen eingeräumt. Man versteht nicht alles, was auf dem Bildschirm passiert, wie könnte man auch? Who is Your Grandfather? klingt wie ein ethnografischer Film, der sich durch das Kino von der Wissenschaft verabschiedet.
