En dernière année au centre de formation du Havre, Abdel, footballeur prodige d’une cité rouennaise, joue son avenir. La touchante chronique d’un parcours sur le fil du rasoir, entre rêves de gloire et hantise de l’échec.

Dans l’intimité du vestiaire, tête baissée et regard en biais, Abdel encaisse les remontrances de son entraîneur, avant de marquer d’une magnifique frappe lointaine après la mi-temps. À 18 ans, le jeune attaquant, originaire d’une cité de la périphérie de Rouen, entame sa dernière année au prestigieux centre de formation du Havre Athletic Club (HAC), vivier de joueurs internationaux tels que Paul Pogba, Dimitri Payet ou Benjamin Mendy. À l’issue de la saison, seuls les meilleurs décrocheront le graal : la signature d’un contrat pro, prémices potentielles de la gloire et de la fortune tant fantasmées. Les recalés, eux, tenteront d’arracher des essais dans d’autres clubs, hantés par le spectre d’un retour à la case départ. Doté d’une incroyable palette technique, Abdel se laisse parfois aussi aller à « la chute libre » – selon les mots de son coach Michael Lebaillif -, entre indocilité et contre-performances. Son talent suffira-t-il à lui ouvrir les portes du haut niveau ? Parviendra-t-il à répondre aux attentes immenses des dirigeants, de son agent, mais aussi des copains du quartier, et surtout de son père, qui a tout misé sur sa réussite ? D’une omniprésence aimante, ce dernier lui cite en exemple sa mère, qui s’est toujours battue malgré son polyhandicap, causé par un AVC à la naissance d’Abdel…

Ce sont ces mois décisifs, sur le fil d’un tout ou rien vertigineux, qu’a captés Fabrice Macaux, de l’intensité du terrain aux retrouvailles familiales dans le pavillon de banlieue, des séances de relooking capillaire aux échanges entre le jeune numéro 7 et son coach, unis par une pudique affection. Dans les crampons du taiseux et attachant Abdel, habité par une sourde révolte, à travers le révélateur du football, miroir grossissant d’une société régie et fracturée par l’argent, son film embrasse la soif d’ascension sociale d’une jeunesse des quartiers à l’horizon limité.

At the end of the season, only the best players will win the grail: the signing of a pro contract, potential beginnings of the glory and the fortune so fantasized. Endowed with an incredible technical palette, Abdel also sometimes lets himself go into « free fall » – in the words of his coach Michael Lebaillif -, between indocility and counter-performance.
