À cheval entre lumière et ténèbres, ce récit lyrique de l’histoire de Regina Mary Ndlovu parle de la douleur qui se cache sous la surface. Survivante d’une vie d’abus sexuels, cette femme albinos farouchement déterminée de Zambie et d’Afrique du Sud, se bat chaque jour pour surmonter son passé et créer un présent dont elle est fière.

En plus d’avoir à faire face aux mythes dangereux entourant les personnes atteintes d’albinisme qui ont mis sa vie en danger constant, Regina Mary lance une émission-débat en ligne autofinancée « My Voice: Albinism The New Era » afin de donner une image moins caricaturale des personnes atteintes d’albinisme. Déterminée à avoir un impact avec sa voix, Regina Mary se prépare pour l’un de ses épisodes les plus difficiles de son talk-show en ligne à ce jour, qui implique d’ouvrir de vieilles blessures pour tenter de trouver la guérison, le soutien et la communauté dans un monde frappé par le COVID-19. Elle réfléchit à sa réalité : ne pas savoir lire ou écrire et avoir tenter plusieurs tentatives de suicide, devenir une conférencière motivatrice et une conquérante du mont Kilimandjaro.

En préparation de l’épisode, Regina Mary parle pour la première fois à sa mère des abus qu’elle a subis dans son enfance, explorant l’intersection des abus et de l’albinisme. Pour tenter de faire résonner sa propre voix et celle des autres visibles sur la scène mondiale, elle doit faire face à ses démons et auto-examiner ses identités qui se cachent sous ses masques. C’est l’histoire de Regina Mary, et c’est sa Voix.

Straddling light and darkness, this lyrical telling of Regina Mary Ndlovu’s story is one about the pain that lurks beneath the surface. A survivor of a lifetime of sexual abuse, this fiercely determined woman with Albinism from Zambia and South Africa, fights every day to overcome her past and create a present that she is proud of.

In addition to having to deal with the dangerous myths surrounding people with Albinism that has kept her life in constant danger, Regina Mary starts a self-funded online talk show « My Voice: Albinism The New Era » in order to position people with Albinism within an affirming framework. Determined to make an impact with her voice, Regina Mary prepares for one of her most difficult episodes of her online Talk Show to date, which entails opening up old wounds in an attempt to find healing, support and community in a COVID-19 world. She reflects on the reality of not being able to read or write and attempting multiple suicide attempts, to becoming a motivational speaker and a conqueror of Mount Kilimanjaro.

In preparation for the episode, Regina Mary speaks to her mother for the first time about the abuse she endured as a child, exploring the intersection of abuse and Albinism. In an attempt to make her own and other voices visible on the world stage, she has to face her demons and self-examine her identities that hide beneath her masks. This is Regina Mary’s story, and this is her Voice.
