L’HISTOIRE
Je regarde à l’intérieur de moi-même, me demandant comment j’en suis arrivée là, surtout à un moment où nous avons cessé de nous poser des questions. Il faut que je me remette à penser au patriotisme qu’on m’a appris, à ce qu’il en reste. Le dialogue devient générationnel, entre mes grands-parents, mes parents, entre moi et les gens de ma génération. Dans l’adieu final, il y a une compréhension, un besoin de réconciliation avec la patrie bien-aimée. Celui qui est au-delà de tout territoire physique, de toute situation politique.
« EL ÚLTIMO PAÍS » EST UN FILM CATARSIS
Vivre loin de Cuba ne m’a pas semblé dramatique jusqu’à ce que je commence à comprendre que le pays allait changer et que je ne serais pas là pour en être témoin. Je savais qu’il fallait s’ouvrir au monde et se renouveler, mais je craignais qu’avec ce renouveau le meilleur d’un système plein de contradictions et d’utopies ne disparaisse aussi. Je voulais filmer ce changement, je voulais rencontrer des Cubains, leur parler, retrouver une appartenance. De l’extérieur, les choses sont vues différemment, d’autres points de vue. Mais retourner à Cuba, inquiète des changements, m’a fait me sentir plus distante et étrange, au lieu de restaurer le sentiment d’appartenance.
Pourquoi suis-je intéressée par des choses qui ne intéressent pas la plupart des Cubains ? Pourquoi remettre en cause précisément cette passivité avec laquelle nous apprenons à attendre que nous décidions ? Pourquoi me sentais-je de plus en plus ridicule, plus j’étais inquiète pour l’avenir de mon propre pays ?

THE STORY
I look inside myself, wondering how I got there, especially at a time when we stopped asking ourselves questions. I have to start thinking about the patriotism I was taught, what is left of it. The dialogue becomes generational, between my grandparents, my parents, between me and people of my generation. In the final farewell there is an understanding, a need for reconciliation with the beloved homeland. The one who is beyond any physical territory, any political situation.
« EL ÚLTIMO PAÍS » IS A CATARSIS FILM
Living far from Cuba didn’t seem like a big deal to me until I began to realize that the country was going to change and that I wouldn’t be there to witness it. I knew that we had to open up to the world and renew ourselves, but I was afraid that with this renewal the best of a system full of contradictions and utopias would also disappear. I wanted to film this change, I wanted to meet Cubans, talk to them, find a sense of belonging. From the outside, things are seen differently, other points of view. But returning to Cuba, worried about the changes, made me feel more distant and strange, instead of restoring a sense of belonging.
Why am I interested in things that do not interest most Cubans? Why question precisely this passivity with which we learn to wait for us to decide? Why did I feel more and more ridiculous, the more worried I was about the future of my own country?
What seemed like a trip back to my country at a time of change turns out to be a trip to discover myself, amid contradictions and questions about my identity as a Cuban.

Procuro dentro de mim, perguntando como cheguei até aqui, sobretudo num momento em que parámos de nos fazer perguntas. Eu preciso de começar a pensar novamente sobre o patriotismo que me foi ensinado, sobre o que restou dele. O diálogo torna-se geracional, entre os meus avós, os meus pais, entre mim e as pessoas da minha geração. Há na despedida final um entendimento, uma necessidade de reconciliação com a pátria amada. Aquela que se encontra para lá de todo o território físico, de qualquer situação política.
« EL ÚLTIMO PAÍS » É UM FILME-CATARSE
Viver longe de Cuba não me parecia dramático até começar a entender que o país iria mudar e que eu não estaria lá para testemunhá-lo. Sabia que precisávamos de nos abrir ao mundo e de nos renovar, mas temia que com essa renovação também desaparecesse o melhor de um sistema cheio de contradições e utopias. Queria filmar essa mudança, queria encontrar-me com cubanos, conversar com eles, voltar a pertencer. De fora, as coisas vêem-se de outra maneira, a partir de outros pontos de vista. Mas voltar a Cuba, preocupada com as mudanças, fez-me sentir-me mais distante e estranha, ao invés de restituir o sentimento de pertença.
Porquê que me interessam coisas que não interessam à maioria dos cubanos? Porquê questionar precisamente essa passividade com que aprendemos a esperar que decidam por nós? Porquê que me sentia cada vez mais ridícula, quanto mais preocupada ficava com o futuro do meu próprio país?
