L’histoire de Kate Ashby, jeune enfant sauvée du génocide rwandais de 1994, qui fut adoptée par Eve Ashby, une célèbre femme procureure britannique spécialisée dans les affaires criminelles internationales. Elevée en Grande-Bretagne, Kate a désormais la vingtaine et travaille comme enquêtrice auprès du juge Michael Ennis. Lorsqu’Eve Ashby se saisit d’une affaire à la Cour pénale internationale, poursuivant un criminel de guerre rwandais, des feux mal éteints se rallument, contraignant Eve et Kate, épaulées par Michael, à se replonger dans un douloureux passé…
