Dans le New York du milieu des années 1990, Inez, qui se bat pour vivre à sa façon, passe de refuge en refuge. Son fils Terry, âgé de 6 ans, étant placé en famille d’accueil et ne pouvant plus le quitter, elle le kidnappe pour qu’ils puissent construire leur vie ensemble. Au fil des années, leur famille s’agrandit et Terry devient un adolescent intelligent et calme, mais le secret qui a défini leur vie menace de détruire le foyer qu’ils ont si improbablement construit.

Dans son étonnant premier long métrage écrit et réalisé, A.V. Rockwell, ancienne élève de Sundance, raconte l’histoire profondément américaine d’une mère et d’un fils qui vivent l’un pour l’autre dans une ville en voie d’embourgeoisement, souvent indifférente à la réalité de leur vie. Grâce à la performance exceptionnelle de Teyana Taylor, qui incarne une mère farouchement déterminée à assurer l’avenir de son enfant, le film est une ode élégante à la beauté de la famille, qui sert de point d’ancrage dans un monde en constante évolution, et qui fait de nous ce que nous sommes d’une manière que nous ne pouvons que difficilement comprendre.
