Un homme se souvient. Jeune adolescent amoureux fou du cinéma, il a connu une histoire unique avec une femme française. Encore aujourd'hui, elle lui semble appartenir à un monde secret. Un monde fait de désirs mais aussi de découvertes. Dans l'innocence comme dans la curiosité, il l'a exploré. Il s'y est aussi un peu brûlé. Il se souvient. Par fragments. Comme un homme qui désire comprendre son passé et son présent. Sa vie de lycéen, sa double vie entre ses amis, sa famille et puis elle. Son envie de mordre la vie à pleines dents dans cette bourgade chauffée par le soleil et l'ennuie. C'est aussi l'amour timide et farouche qu'il portait à une si belle jeune fille. Et puis surtout sa vie de cinéma. C'est un personnage, c'est aussi un innocent qui a cru toucher les étoiles.

Que faisons-nous de nos secrets qui ressurgissent, lancinants, à la mémoire ? Le temps de la mémoire n'est pas celui de nos souvenirs. Ce temps que je ne cesse de vouloir retrouver dans mes films, est celui qui m'a amené à aborder cette part sauvage que tout adolescent vit une fois dans sa vie. Le désir à l'état brut. L'histoire d'un jeune homme qui, une fois adulte, se souvient. De sa jeunesse façonnée par le cinéma, de sa rage de vivre ce que l'écrin du cinéma offre. J'ai toujours été taraudé par ce qui m'était tombé du ciel dans ma jeunesse. N'ai-je pas inventé une vie aussi belle que le cinéma offre ? La vie m'a mené très loin de mon pays, et je ne cesse d'y revenir pour y créer. Le temps est venu d'explorer cette vie enfouie. Si nostalgie il y a, elle est alors littéralement ce retour de la douleur, sans quoi aucune création n'est véritablement possible.

Story of M (The)
Today, a man remembers. As a teenager, madly in love with cinema, he had lived a unique story with a French woman. Even now, the woman seems to him to belong to a secret world - one made of desire but also of discovery. As much from innocence as curiosity, he explored that world. He also got a bit burned there. He remembers. In fragments. Like a man who wants to understand his past and his present. His life as a high school student, his double life among his adolescent friends, his family, then her. His desire to live life to the fullest in this town heated by the sun and by boredom. The timid and fierce love he had for a beautiful young girl of his age. But above all, his life in the cinema. He is a character; he is also an innocent who believed he could touch the stars.

The time that I keep wanting to recapture in all my films is the one that led me to tackle this wild part of life that every teenager experiences. Desire in its raw state. The story of a young man who remembers as an adult. From his youth, shaped by cinema, and his rage to experience what the movie theatre screen setting offered. I've always been teased by what fell from the sky in my youth. Hadn't I invented a life as beautiful and large as the one that cinema offers?
