LAKE WOMEN is about a strong, determined woman who finds treasure on Lake Kivu, and begins a quest to form the first Rwandan fisherwomen’s group ever.
After many years of being mistreated and disrespected by fishermen with whom she was trading fish, Nyiranzeyimana Mariana, 49 years old, mother of six children, decided to spend the whole night pulling the net on her own and she gained twice the income several fishermen usually gained in a night. By breaking traditional gender roles and norms, this woman became a matriarch in her community by forming the first-ever fisherwomen group. Lake Women follows this woman’s mission to challenge the patriarchal structure of the fishing community on her island.
