Director’s Intention:
« Red Path » tells the story of how childhood, faced with extreme violence, also has the kind of magical power to transcend that violence by using the psychic and dream tools at its disposal.
Although marked by a bloody starting point, the film never indulges in it and only focuses on it to get to the heart of what concerns me: observing the mutations of my character. By focusing on this process, the film becomes Achraf’s journey of initiation and the story of his emergence from childhood. « Red Path » is, above all, the story of a struggle for survival.

Ashraf, a shepherd boy working with his teenage cousin in impoverished northern Tunisia faces the unimaginable when Islamic State terrorists set on them and behead his cousin Nizar in front of him. Ashraf has no choice but to take the head back to his family, who can do nothing: the terrorists are a constant threat, while the police are indifferent to the problems of poor herders. Nizar’s parents fixate on trying to recover his body for a proper burial, but Ashraf has no way of dealing with his trauma, clinging to the visions he has of Nizar during which he can talk to his cousin’s ghost.

RED PATH is a dreamlike journey into the wounded psyche of a young shepherd, Achraf, and his ability to overcome the traumatic death of his cousin.
While grazing their flock in the mountains, two teenagers were attacked by Jihadists. Accused of being an army informer, 16-year-old Nizar is beheaded, and 14-year-old Achraf is ordered to carry his cousin’s severed head as a gruesome message to the family. Achraf, haunted by visions, will carry his terrible burden through a painful initiatory journey during which he will need to summon all the tools of imagination and childhood in an attempt to survive.

أشرف » وهو راعي غنم يعمل مع ابن عمّه المراهق في شمال تونس الفقير، يواجه المأساة عندما يهاجمه إرهابيّو الدّولة الإسلاميّة، ويقطعوا رأس ابن عمّه « نزار » أمامه. ليس أمام « أشرف » خيار سوى إعادة الرأس إلى عائلته، الّتي لا تستطيع فعل أيّ شيء: فالإرهابيّون يشكّلون تهديدًا دائمًا، بينما تبدو الشّرطة غير مبالية بمشاكل الرّعاة الفقراء. يركّز والدا « نزار » على محاولة استعادة جثّته لدفنه بشكل صحيح، أمّا « أشرف » الّذي لا يملك طريقة يتعامل فيها مع صدمته، يتمسّك بالرّؤى الّتي لديه ل »نزار »، والّتي يمكن أن يتحدّث من خلالها مع شبح ابن عمّه. إنّها رحلة استثنائيّة إلى النّفس الجريحة لطفل في منطقة حرب، تزداد عمقًا بفضل أداء علي الحليليّ المذهل
