Jenifer, étudiante à l'Université de Bangui, donne naissance à un enfant mort-né. Selon la tradition centrafricaine, elle ne doit pas pleurer. Elle doit oublier "l'enfant qui n'était pas" et se projeter dans une nouvelle grossesse. Mais la douleur de Jenifer ne disparaît pas, et son conjoint commence à douter d'elle : est-elle malade, possédée?

Sadness
SADNESS tells the story of a young woman who undergoes a terrible loss. This tragedy forces her to rethink her place in society and reinvent her life and identity as a Central African woman.
Jenifer, a student at the University of Bangui, gives birth to a stillborn child. According to Central African tradition, she must not cry. She must forget "the child that was not" and project herself into a new pregnancy. But Jenifer's pain doesn't go away, and her partner begins to doubt her: is she ill, possessed? Jenifer's impossible mourning and the inability of those closest to her to understand her will shatter her relationship and her family but paradoxically lead Jenifer on the path to emancipation.

Director's Intention:
In my country, the Central African Republic, tradition states that one mustn't cry for a child who has not been born. The woman is advised to get pregnant again as soon as possible to forget this terrible ordeal. It is a fate that one must accept without protest. To do otherwise would be an insult to God's will. This perception is shared by everyone, including the medical profession.
As a young Central African woman, I am angered by the status of women in our society. The only possible role they're allowed to have is that of a housewife. To do this, the film will rarely, if ever, leave Jenifer's side, so that audiences can experience the events alongside her, with the greatest proximity to her emotions.

She was born in the town of Bossemptélé in the Central African Republic in
1998. After completing a baccalauréat, she enrolled at the University of Bangui, where she obtained a degree in private law in 2022, and a Master 1 in Penal and Criminal Sciences in 2023. In 2020, was selected for a training course in film- making, run by CinéFabrique in Bangui, CAR. She wrote and directed her first short film, ‘Pas avant le Bac', which tells the story of a young man who refuses to sleep with his girlfriend until he has passed his baccalauréat, a behavior that provokes incomprehension and rejection from those around him. A few months later, she wrote another short, ‘Wali', which tells the story of a young woman who, in order to free herself from the financial guardianship of her husband, decides to become a motorcycle cab driver, a profession generally reserved for men.
Naël Marandin
Co-Screenwriter
Naël Marandin is an experienced French screenwriter and director. His second feature film, ‘La Terre des hommes' (Beasts) was selected at the 2020 Cannes Critics' Week before going on to win multiple awards in film festivals. Naël went to the Central African Republic twice, in 2021 and 2022, to participate in the CinéBangui training program. This is where he met Emmanuella Lalanga for the first time and assisted her in her second short film.
