Fils et frère de militaire, le général Paris de Bollardière se destinait à une carrière militaire. Il fut pendant de nombreuses années l'un des plus brillants représentants de cette carrière en France ; de Narvik à la guerre d'Algérie, il acquit une réputation de guerrier valeureux, de meneur d'hommes, au courage et aux connaissances quasi légendaires. Après avoir combattu dans le maquis français, il rejoignit l'Indochine, où il se retrouva soudain dans les camps de l'agresseur. Ses convictions furent fortement ébranlées.



Mais c'est en Algérie, où l'armée française pratiquait la torture et les exécutions sommaires, qu'il prit un grand tournant. Il exprima son mépris pour Massu, et fut relevé de son commandement. Après le putsch des généraux, il remet sa démission à Pierre Messmer, ministre des Armées. La boucle est bouclée. Jusqu'à sa mort en 1986, Jacques de Bollardière va se battre avec acharnement pour la paix dans le monde, des plateaux du Larzac aux atolls de Mururoa.
