Raï Story est un voyage musical à la recherche de la légende du Raï, Cheikha Remitti, à Oran en Algérie, là où a commencé la tradition musicale du Raï. En 1923, les premiers chanteurs de Raï se produisaient derrière des écrans lors des cérémonies afin de protéger leur identité. Ce n'est que lorsque la musique de la chanteuse Cheikha Remitti a commencé à gagner en popularité auprès du grand public que la musique Raï a été rendue publique, dans les années 1940.



Cheikha Remitti, qui vie Entre paris et Oran, est introuvable, les cinéastes décident alors de partir à la rencontre des producteurs, musiciens, chanteuses comme Cheba Dalila ou Cheba Djenet, à qui Remitti à crée un sillage. L'occasion au travers de ces histoires singulières, illustrée d'images d'archives, de retracer la place importante des femmes dans cette tradition musicale et la transformation de la musique Raï des années 1960 à 2000.
