La vie et l'activisme politique de Messali Hadj (1898-1974), homme politique internationaliste algérien qui joua un rôle de pionnier dans le processus d'indépendance de l'Algérie, qu'il réclama dès 1927. Secrétaire de l'Étoile nord-africaine (ENA), il fonda en 1937 le Parti populaire algérien (PPA), en 1946 le Mouvement pour le triomphe des libertés démocratiques (MTLD) et enfin, en 1954, le Mouvement national algérien (MNA).
En 1937, la direction de l'Étoile nord-africaine (ENA) créa son drapeau, vert avec une étoile et un croissant blancs. L'épouse de Messali Hadj, Émilie Busquant-Messali, le cousit à la machine ; ce drapeau deviendra plus tard celui du PPA. Le programme du PPA visait à satisfaire les revendications « Pain, Paix, Terre et Liberté », centrées sur la création d'une assemblée constituante, le suffrage universel et la nationalisation des banques et des chemins de fer. À cette époque, les hydrocarbures n'avaient pas encore été découverts. Messali Hadj n'a jamais dissocié la lutte pour les revendications nationales de la prise en compte des besoins des ouvriers et des paysans pauvres.
En 1943, en collaboration avec la direction du parti, il créa le drapeau de l'ENA-PPA, un drapeau vert et blanc orné d'une étoile et d'un croissant rouges, qui deviendra plus tard le drapeau actuel de la République algérienne démocratique et populaire.

The life and political activism of Messali Hadj (1898-1974), an Algerian internationalist politician who played a pioneering role in the process leading to Algerian independence, which he demanded as early as 1927. He was initially secretary of the North African Star (ENA), then in 1937 he founded the Algerian People's Party (PPA), in 1946 he founded the Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties (MTLD), and finally in 1954, the Algerian National Movement (MNA).
In 1937, the leadership of the North African Star (ENA) created its flag, green with a white star and crescent. Messali Hadj's wife, Emilie Busquant-Messali, simply sewed this ENA flag by machine; it would later become the flag of the PPA. The PPA's program was focused on achieving the demands of "Bread, Peace, Land, and Freedom," centered on the issues of a constituent assembly, universal suffrage, and the nationalization of banks and railways. At the time, the discovery of hydrocarbons had not yet occurred. Messali Hadj never separated the struggle for national demands from addressing the needs of poor workers and peasants.
