Françoise, 25 ans et Alexandre 27 ans, habitent à Lausanne. Par amour pour sa petite amie, Alexandre lui a proposé de se marier religieusement au Cameroun, pays natal de Françoise. La préparation des festivités, aux mains de l’oncle africain, prend une ampleur considérable et crée quelques tensions au sein du jeune couple. Les parents d’Alexandre, également du voyage, oscillent entre curiosité et préjugés. La petite famille de la campagne vaudoise va se retrouver pour la première fois, nez à nez avec la grande famille africaine.

Die 25-jährige Françoise und der 27-jährige Alexandre leben in Lausanne. Aus Liebe zu seiner kleinen Freundin hat ihr Alexandre vorgeschlagen, sich in Kamerun, dem Heimatland von Françoise, vor dem Altar trauen zu lassen. Die Vorbereitungen der Feierlichkeiten durch den afrikanischen Onkel nehmen ein beträchtliches Ausmass an und sorgen für etliche Spannungen beim jungen Paar. Die Eltern von Alexandre haben sich ebenfalls auf die Reise gemacht und sind von Neugier und Vorurteilen hin- und hergerissen. Die Kleinfamilie aus dem Waadtland wird erstmals der grossen afrikanischen Familie gegenüberstehen.

Françoise, 25, and Alexandre, 27, live in Lausanne and plan to marry soon. Alexandre suggests having the religious ceremony in Cameroon, where Françoise was born. With the help of Françoise’s African uncle the couple embark on extensive marriage preparations. In Africa marriage is a big event, and celebrated accordingly, so inevitably, the couple’s families have rather different ideas and hilarious misunderstandings ensue. Alexandre’s parents oscillate between curiosity and prejudice, whilst Françoise takes the opportunity to ponder on her identity straddling two continents. It’s time for the small family from Switzerland to come face to face with the big family in Africa. Without falling into the trap of racial stereotypes, Yang’s documentary on the meeting of two different cultures is astute and packed with humour.
