Les habitants de l’Île-aux-Coudres, dans l’estuaire du fleuve Saint-Laurent, reconstituent pour la caméra une ancestrale pêche au marsouin comme ils la pratiquaient autrefois. Ils ne l’auraient pas fait sans l’appel du cinéma. Invités à revivre ce qui fut, dans le présent du tournage, ils incarnent leur propre légende, scellant les retrouvailles avec eux-mêmes. Ce jalon de l’histoire du cinéma documentaire marqua la naissance officielle du cinéma québécois.

The inhabitants of Île-aux-Coudres in the estuary of the Saint Lawrence River replay for the camera the ancestral catch of the white whale as they used to practice it. They would not have done so without the appearance of cinema. Invited to relive past experience in the present of the shoot, they embody their own legend, renewing relationships with each other. This milestone in the history of documentary cinema marked the official birth of Quebec cinema.
