1981 : à l’occasion de l’arrivée de la gauche au pouvoir, la télévision française commande à Godard un film sur le thème du changement. Comme Lettre à Freddy Buache, ce film est né de l’impossibilité de répondre à la commande. Car le lieu d’apparition du changement n’est pas l’image mais l’écart entre les images. Changer d’image, c’est d’abord changer le rapport du documentaire et de la fiction.

1981: at the moment the left won power, French television commissioned Godard to make a film on the theme of change. Like Lettre à Freddy Buache, this film is born of the impossibility of carrying out the commission. For the space where change appears is not the image but the gap between images.
Changer d’image is first of all changing the relationship between documentary and fiction.
