Le territoire ou se trouve la deuxième plus grande population noire au monde hors de l’Afrique, a depuis longtemps la réputation de pratiquer l’harmonie raciale – un mythe. Ce film documentaire accompagne trois personnalités sur la ligne de front de la bataille moderne pour l’égalité des droits: à Brasília, le seul sénateur noir dans tout le pays prend position pour le droit civil et les droits fonciers. À São Paulo, une célèbre pop star fonde une nouvelle chaîne de télévision qui présente la société brésilienne comme elle est – multiraciale. Et quelque part dans les campagnes reculées – Quilombos, une petite-fille d’esclaves africains défend son droit légitime de propriété sur la terre de ses ancêtres.

Raça is a feature-documentary about race in Brazil, a topic igniting passionate debate across the country. Brazil imported ten times more slaves than the U.S. and was the last nation to abolish slavery. Yet, while race has been overtly divisive in most countries with a legacy of slavery, Brazil has long boasted of its intermixing and racial harmony. Today, however, Brazilians are awakening to the reality that opportunity increases directly with the whiteness of one’s skin. Half of all Brazilians are of African descent-the world’s second largest black population-yet they are nearly absent in the halls of power and history books. As their country’s economy booms, millions of black Brazilians are no longer willing for the disparities between light and dark skin to be explained away by class. Raça follows three people on the frontlines of this hauntingly familiar, yet quintessentially Brazilian, battle for equality. In the modernist capital of Brasilia, the country’s only black senator fights for landmark civil rights legislation. In the fast-paced metropolis of São Paulo, a famous black pop-star launches a TV station with a cast that looks like Brazil rather than Scandinavia. And deep in the rural countryside, a granddaughter of slaves mobilizes her neighbors to defend ancestral land rights. Together, they form a vibrant portrait of a people struggling to redefine themselves and their nation.

RAÇA capta a história de três pessoas na linha de frente da batalha contemporânea pela igualdade, em um país que se orgulha de ser exemplo de democracia racial. Entre eles o esforço do Senador Paulo Paim para sancionar a lei do « Estatuto da Igualdade Racial » no Congresso Nacional, em Brasília. Autor do projeto original que demorou quase uma década para ser aprovado. O documentário também apresenta a luta de Miúda dos Santos – neta de africanos escravizados e ativista quilombola – pela posse das terras e pelo respeito às suas tradições ancestrais da Comunidade Quilombola de Linharinho, no Espírito Santo. E Netinho de Pauloa e os bastidores da trajetória do cantor, apresentador e empresário durante todo o processo de criação e tentativa de consolidar do seu canal TV da Gente formado majoritariamente por profissionais negros.
