KAFE NEGRO: UNE HISTOIRE DE MIGRATIONS raconte essentiellement les vagues de migrations des travailleurs haïtiens à Cuba qui ont, au fil du temps, profondément transformé la culture et la démographie de l’île et permis le développement de cette caféiculture à Cuba.
Il s’agit d’abord de la migration du savoir-faire des Français de St-Domingue, 1er producteur mondial de café au 18ème siècle, qui s’expatrient vers Cuba avec leurs esclaves, fuyant la révolution haïtienne, et introduisent « la révolution du café ».
Au 19ème siècle, les ouvriers agricoles haïtiens viendront de nouveau à Cuba comme coupeurs de canne à sucre, mais après la récolte sucrière, ils iront en hauteur pour la cueillette du café. Avant tout, ce documentaire a fait le choix de montrer les mains des travailleurs plutôt que de faire chanter chiffres, productions, rendements. Il se regarde comme un hymne au travail manuel.

KAFE NEGRO, A HISTORY OF MIGRATIONS essentially tells the waves of migrations of Haitian workers in Cuba which have, over time, profoundly transformed the culture and demographics of the island and allowed the development of the coffee culture in Cuba. It is at the start the migration of the know-how of the French from Santo Domingo, the world’s leading coffee producer in the 18th century, who expatriate themselves to Cuba with their slaves, fleeing the Haitian revolution, and introduce « the coffee revolution ». In the 19th century, Haitian farm workers would come to Cuba again as sugar cane cutters, but after the sugar harvest, they would go up high to pick coffee.
