Dans un quartier marginalisé d'Alexandrie, deux frères tentent de survivre. Hossam, 23 ans, jeune homme impulsif et bagarreur, et Maro, 12 ans, vivent avec leur famille dans un environnement industriel écrasant. Après la mort de leur père dans un supposé accident de travail à l'usine, la direction leur propose des emplois en guise de "compensation", à condition qu'ils renoncent à toute action en justice. Hossam reprend le poste de son père, tandis que Maro est employé comme aide. Au fil des jours, les deux frères découvrent la dureté des cadences, la brutalité de la hiérarchie et le mépris qui entoure les ouvriers. Peu à peu, les zones d'ombre autour de la mort du père se multiplient : était‑ce vraiment un accident ou le résultat d'un système qui sacrifie les travailleurs pour protéger ses profits ? En suivant les gestes répétés au travail, les tensions familiales et les tentatives de résistance, le film montre comment la colère de Hossam et la soif de justice de Maro se heurtent à une réalité sociale verrouillée, dans une Égypte où la violence des rapports de classe et l'absence de recours légal étouffent toute contestation.

Settlement (The)
A factory witnessed the death of Sayed, father of Hossam (23). The only compensation offered to the family is to propose Hossam to work in the same position as his father, next to the person who caused his father's accidental death.
In a shanty town in Alexandria, lives Hossam (23) and Maro (12), two brothers. After their father Sayed gets killed accidentally in the factory by one of his colleagues Mostafa, the factory manager convinces Sayed's family to relinquish their legal rights in exchange of hiring both Hossam and Maro in the factory. Hossam feels belittled, but he decides to accept the offer for his feeling of responsibility towards his family and because he is also aware that he has no skills that can make him eligible for any other job. Hossam and Maro receive their new jobs only a month after the accident and on their way to the factory, they know that they will have to work hand in hand with Mostafa, the person they know to be the cause of their fathers' death. On day one, all workers are vigilant towards Hossam, especially Mostafa, they all know beforehand from his late father how hostile and misfit he is and all his friends are outlaws. Hossam on the other hand, acts quiet and reserved. Hossam realizes while dealing with his new co-workers that his father used to speak badly about him and this bad image made everyone await Hossam's revenge.

INTENTION BY THE FILM DIRECTOR
I intend the plot to be captivating and engaging. This comes from the protagonist's character development and the situation he is put into. As the story escalates, the tension rises. Will Hossam avenge his father ‘s death, or comply with working for the factory to sustain a stable life? While the plot follows a vengeance story, the result is not a typical revenge film but a one with a deeper layer and a different dimension. I personally find the industrial spaces to be full with cinematic elements and visually appealing details. These spaces are fresh and new as it's very rare to see an Egyptian film that takes place in them. The film is shot in a factory, and in a neighborhood where the protagonist lives which is an industrial urban space itself, and the highway connecting them. These spaces reflect the roughness the workers endure in their everyday lives. The cinematic language of the film relies on static long takes. The characters are often suspended in the space in cinematic wide shots. They are not separated from these spaces where they were brought up, live, work, and interact with each other and with it. Like their scenes in the factory between the machines.

In a shanty town in Alexandria, lives Hossam (23) and Maro (12), two brothers. After their father Sayed gets killed accidentally in the factory by one of his colleagues Mostafa, the factory manager convinces Sayed's family to relinquish their legal rights in exchange of hiring both Hossam and Maro in the factory. Hossam feels belittled, but he decides to accept the offer for his feeling of responsibility towards his family and because he is also aware that he has no skills that can make him eligible for any other job. Hossam and Maro receive their new jobs only a month after the accident and on their way to the factory, they know that they will have to work hand in hand with Mostafa, the person they know to be the cause of their fathers' death. On day one, all workers are vigilant towards Hossam, especially Mostafa, they all know beforehand from his late father how hostile and misfit he is and all his friends are outlaws. Hossam on the other hand, acts quiet and reserved. Hossam realizes while dealing with his new co-workers that his father used to speak badly about him and this bad image made everyone await Hossam's revenge.

Settlement (The)
Num bairro marginalizado de trabalhadores em Alexandria, dois irmãos tentam sobreviver. Hossam, 23 anos, impulsivo e propenso a arranjar confusões, e o irmão mais novo Maro, de 12 anos, vivem com a família à sombra de um grande complexo industrial. Depois da morte do pai, que a fábrica qualifica como um "acidente" de trabalho, a direção oferece aos dois rapazes empregos como forma de "indemnização", com a condição de que não entrem em processo judicial. Hossam assume o posto que era do pai na linha de produção, enquanto Maro é contratado como ajudante. À medida que se adaptam às novas funções, descobrem a dureza do ritmo de trabalho, a brutalidade da hierarquia e o desprezo com que os operários são tratados. Pouco a pouco, surgem zonas de sombra em torno da morte do pai: terá sido realmente um acidente ou o resultado previsível de um sistema que sacrifica os trabalhadores para proteger os seus lucros? Acompanhando de perto os gestos repetidos na fábrica, as tensões familiares e as tentativas de resistência, o filme mostra como a raiva de Hossam e a sede de justiça de Maro se confrontam com uma ordem social rigidamente controlada no Egito, onde a violência de classe e a ausência de recurso legal sufocam qualquer contestação.

En un barrio obrero marginado de Alejandría, dos hermanos intentan sobrevivir. Hossam, de 23 años, impulsivo y pendenciero, y su hermano pequeño Maro, de 12 años, viven con su familia a la sombra de un gran complejo industrial. Tras la muerte de su padre, que la fábrica presenta como un "accidente" laboral, la dirección les ofrece trabajos como forma de "compensación", con la condición de que no emprendan acciones legales. Hossam ocupa el puesto de su padre en la cadena de producción, mientras que Maro es contratado como ayudante. A medida que se adaptan a sus nuevos roles, descubren la dureza del ritmo de trabajo, la brutalidad de la jerarquía y el desprecio con el que se trata a los obreros. Poco a poco, las zonas de sombra en torno a la muerte del padre se multiplican: ¿fue realmente un accidente o el resultado previsible de un sistema que sacrifica a sus trabajadores para proteger sus beneficios? Al seguir de cerca los gestos repetitivos en la fábrica, las tensiones familiares y los intentos de resistencia, la película muestra cómo la rabia de Hossam y la sed de justicia de Maro chocan con un orden social férreamente controlado en Egipto, donde la violencia de clase y la ausencia de recursos legales sofocan cualquier forma de contestación.
