Il s'agit du portrait de Paul Gauthier, qui, jeune prêtre, enseigne la théologie et la philosophie au grand séminaire de Dijon.
En 1957, il décide de partir en Terre-Sainte pour vivre, pauvre, parmi les pauvres. Il s'installe à Nazareth et devient prêtre-ouvrier, travaillant comme terrassier sur des chantiers.
Au fil du temps, Paul prend conscience du drame palestinien qu'il ignorait. Il lance alors le projet de construction de la cité ouvrière qui donnera aux plus démunis un logement décent.
En 1958, il est rejoint par Myriam, qui se bat à ses côtés et devient, à jamais, sa fidèle compagne.
En 1967, la Guerre des Six jours éclate. Révolté par ce qu'elle génère d'horreurs, il quitte Israël pour se rendre utile, ailleurs…

Cette expérience sera renouvelée plus tard à Bethléem et à Beit-Sahour. En 1958, il sera rejoint par Myriam qui devient, très vite, son bras droit et sa fidèle compagne, luttant à ses côtés dans toutes les péripéties de son parcours. En 1967, la guerre des six jours éclate. Révolté par les scènes d'horreurs auxquelles il assiste, il quitte Israël et reprend son bâton de pèlerin pour se rendre utile là où on a besoin d'un peu de chaleur humaine.

Paul the Carpenter
A portrait of Paul Gautier, a young priest who studied theology in the Dijon seminary in France. In 1957, he decided to go to live in the Holy Land, to live with the people. Based in Nazareth, his conscience opened to the drama of the Palestinian people, and so began a construction project to give back to them what he could.
