Using gender, generation and social justice as tools for analysing research data, the twelve papers in this study illustrate how men and women experiences life constraints, opportunities and needs within urban environments differently, and how differences also occur along generational lines. The contributors consider in particular how rising poverty levels and HIV/AIDS are affecting household structures and survival strategies. They suggest that egalitarian attitudes towards gender and generational justice have strengthened, but that persistent traditional rules and practices continue to exclude women from decision-making.
