==============

Dear friends,

We are writing in order to inform you about the critical situation of the Egyptian writer Nawal El Saadawi. The Arab reedition of her novel The Fall of the Imam has been forbidden in her country by the « Centre for Islamic Studies », whose director Al Azhar claims that the novel’s contents are contrary to the values of the Islamic religion, despite the fact that the novel was first published twenty years ago and has been translated since then into 14 different languages all over the world!

Nawal El Saadawi is a novelist, a psychiatrist and a thinker who is well known in the Arab countries and in many other parts of the world. Her novels and her books on the Egyptian and Arab society have had a deep effect on successive generations of young women and men over the last three decades. In 1981 President Sadat put her and many other Egyptian intellectuals in prison. It was while in prison where she wrote parts of the novel that is now being banned. Nawal El Saadawi has also worked for the United Nations, and has been the founder and president of many associations in favour of all the women in the Arab countries, like « Arab Women Solidarity Association », « Arab Association for Human Rights » and « African Association for Women on Research and Development ». This controversy has revealed once again the problem of censorship and the lack of freedom of expression in some countries of the world. The intellectual defence of the freedom of speech is the reason why the author wants to start an international campaign in defence of the writers’ artistic freedom. Through the following links, you will enter into web sites with more detailed information, where you may express your point of view and sign against this banning in order to obtain a worldwide effect: www.nawalsaadawi.net, www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/526881890 and www.rezgar.com/camp/i.asp?id=23.
Nawal El Saadawi has been awarded several national and international literary prizes, has lectured in many universities and has participated in many international and national conferences. Her works have been translated into over 30 languages all over the world, and some of them are read and analysed in a number of university colleges in different countries. Beyond her international fame as a writer, we can say her figure stands out because of her strong ideals and convictions, which sometimes have led her to prison, to exile and even to a death sentence proclaimed by Islamic fundamentalists. We hope you can enter the links and sign the lists! And, please, do forward this e-mail to everyone you know!
