offered fellowships to study in the us
East African journalists from developing communities can apply for the Ford Foundation's new annual International Fellowship Program (IFP) for post-graduate study in the United States.
Residents of Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are eligible for the 28 IFP scholarships, which are underwritten by the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA).
The scholarships will provide senior journalists, media managers and other media professionals with support for up to three years of formal post-graduate study leading to the award of a master's or doctoral degree in areas, including journalism.
The new program's fundamental objective is to provide opportunities to exceptional individuals from diverse backgrounds, social groups and communities that lack systematic access to higher education. Ford International Fellows, as recipients of the fellowships will be called, are expected to use their education to become leaders in fields that further the Ford Foundation's goals. These include strengthening democratic values, reducing poverty and injustice, promoting international cooperation and advancing human achievement.
Each fellowship covers tuition fees, subsistence allowance, travel and other related expenses.
Applications received on or before August 15 will be considered for the 2003-2004 academic year. Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by panels, composed of women and men from various academic and professional fields, who will make the final selections. The level and duration of the award will be determined as part of the placement process.
