Why Participate ?
In November 2003, during 5 days, our 2nd National Film Festival, NFF, Lagos 2003, thrilled film enthusiasts with new, original and vintage pictures, showcasing Nigerian art, culture and creativity. This time around, thousands of persons from all over the world will be, as usual since 1992, gather at the 3rd National Film Festival now branded ZUMA Film Festival, 2006, Abuja – NIGERIA.
This edition promises to bring together, under one roof, actors, actresses, directors, cinematographers, producers, marketers, distributors, exhibitors – from different parts of the world – for the biennial selection and celebration of our creativity and resourcefulness as a people.
Theme
We invite you to participate in the bi-ennial Zuma Film Festival, 2006 with the theme « Ingenuity: The Harvest of Our Creative Spirit ».
Organisation
The ZFF 2006 is being organized in collaboration with stakeholders in the Nigerian film industry, under the direction of the Festival Technical Organising Committee, and co-ordinated by the Festival Secretariat.
The Aim and Objectives
The aim of the Festival is to promote, recognize and reward creativity and excellence in the film and video industry, as well as expand and create a market for Nigerian and African films. The Festival is also designed to celebrate creativity and ingenuity in the true sense of Nigerian and African spirit.
The objective, among others, is to consolidate the current growth and development in the motion picture industry. The Festival will also focus attention on the promotion of culture, art and tourism.
Participants are invited to come and enjoy the hospitality Nigeria has to offer.
Date and Place
ZUMA Film Festival will be held in Abuja, Nigeria’s alluring new Capital City, from 11 – 16 March 2006.

FESTIVAL REGULATIONS
1. Eligibility
Clause 1.1: The Zuma Film Festival is open to all Nigerian films/videos made on or about Nigeria and/or Nigerian realities; (produced within the eligibility period set by the Technical Committee).
Clause 1.2: Feature and Documentary films produced between December 1, 2004 and November 30, 2005 are eligible for entry in the Competitive Category, while films produced not earlier than December 2003 are eligible for entry in the Non-Competitive Category.
Clause 1.3: In respect of Documentary, only those films certified as Non-Fiction and Short films such as Student’s Degree/Diploma films produced by the National Film Institute (NFI), or any such institution recognized by government, within the eligibility period above shall be eligible.
Clause 1.4: Only those persons whose names are on the credit title of the film/video and are normally residing and working in Nigeria, or Nigerians resident and working abroad, shall be eligible for the competitive awards.
Clause 1.5: The Zuma Film Festival Technical Committee reserves the right to reject any film/video which is incompatible with the aims of the Festival or which could offend the national feelings.
Clause 1.6: Once a film/video has been entered, it cannot be withdrawn from competition during the Festival.
Clause 1.7: No film/video may be screened during the Festival outside Festival official theatres before its official presentation.
2. Categories
Clause 2.1: The Festival has two categories namely: Competitive and Non-Competitive.
2.1.1 Competitive: This section is reserved for Nigerian films/videos by Nigerian directors working in Nigeria or abroad: Feature Films/Videos; Documentary Films/Videos; Animation/Cartoon; TV Soaps/Serials/Series; Children Films/Videos; Student Films/Videos; Short Films/Videos.
2.2 Non-Competitive:
_ Nigerian Panorama: This section admits Feature and Documentary films/videos on Nigeria by Nigerians and non – Nigerian directors.
Ç Diaspora and African Films: This section admits Feature and Documentary films by Nigerian directors in Diaspora and by African directors.
Ç Universal Films: Reserved for films from the rest of the World (excluding Africa).
Ç Retrospectives/Tributes: This section admits Feature and Documentary films which fall outside the above sub-sections, but are clearly aimed at paying tribute to a particular heritage or personage. The films must have been produced by Nigerian veteran filmmakers, living or departed.
3. Entering films in the Festival
Clause 3.1: A film/video shall be entered only by its producer for all the awards in the competitive category. A producer may enter two or more films in any of the categories – Competitive and Non-Competitive, but no one film shall be entered in both categories.
Clause 3.2: Each title of a film entered for the Festival must have a separate Entry Form.
Clause 3.3: Official participants in the Festival include filmmakers and any other individuals entering works eligible for the Festival and/or invited by the Organizing Committee.
Clause 3.4: English is the Festival working language.
Clause 3.5: The Organizing Committee will not assume responsibility for damages to the film/video caused by poor packaging and transportation. Print and video copies are however under insurance while in the custody of the Committee.
Clause 3.6: The Organizing Committee at its expense will return all films after the Festival to the address written in the Entry Form.
Clause 3.7: Entries are to be supported with a statement of synopsis in English not exceeding one paragraph in the space provided on the Entry Forms, plus two (2) passport photographs of the producer in the case of Feature films/videos/TV series.
Clause 3.8: For Documentary entries, one paragraph synopsis in English, plus two (2) passport photographs of the producer.
4. Screening/Format for selection
Clause 4.1: The Festival will only allow a maximum of 4 screenings of any film/video selected; while films/video not in competition will be allowed a maximum of 3 screenings per film.
Clause 4.2: The Festival accepts entries on 35mm, 16mm, (with optical sound track), DVD-Video or Betacam, on VHS or VCD copy, in either PAL or NTSC.
5. Deadline for participation
Clause 5.1: All entries (and supporting materials), including prints, must be received by the Festival Technical Committee, not later than February 16th, 2006 at any of the following addresses:

Clause 5.2: Participation in the Festival implies acceptance/agreement with these Regulations, applicable to the Zuma Film Festival, to be held in Abuja – NIGERIA from 11 – 16 March 2006.
6. The Jury:
Clause 6.1: There will be a Jury for each of the Competitive complements of the Festival.
Clause 6.2: The Jury shall be constituted by the Festival Technical Committee. Members will be men and women of high integrity and experience in the creative arts selected from Nigeria and outside. The Jury for each of the 7 Competitive complements of the Festival shall not exceed 7, and not less than 3, including the Chairman.
Clause 6.3: Any person directly associated with the works entered in the Competitive categories shall not be eligible to serve on the jury of the particular category.
Clause 6.4: The jury shall evolve its own working procedure.
Clause 6.5: The Chairman, Festival Technical Committee or his nominee may be present during the jury deliberations, but shall have no voting rights.
7. The Prizes
Trophies and Certificates of Participation will be given to all winning and selected films. Prize money attached to some of the categories would however be determined by the Technical Committee, on the recommendation of the Jury. Endowment is expected for some of these prizes.
7.1 The Prize List:
7.1.1 Gold Prizes:
The following Gold prizes will be awarded by the Jury: _ Best Film/Video (Feature); _ Best Documentary; _ Best TV Serials; _ Best Animation/Cartoon; _ Best Student Film/Video; _ Best Short Film/Video; _ Best Children Film/Video.
7.2 Other Awards/Prizes:
7.2.1 Feature Films: _ Best 1st Film/Video of a Director; _ Best Film/Video on Social Issues; _ Best Film/Video on Environmental Conservation/Preservation; _ Best Film/Video in any of the indigenous languages; _ Best Foreign Film/Video.
7.2.2 Individual Awards: Best Director; Best Actor; Best Actress; Best Cinematography; Best Screenplay; Best Audiography (Sound); Best Editing.
7.2.3 Documentary Films _ Best Biographical Film/Video; _ Best Arts/Cultural Film/Video; _ Best Promotion Film/Video on Tourism/Exports; _ Best Agricultural Film/Video; _ Best Film/Video on Social Issues; _ Best Foreign Film/Video.
7.2.4 TV Serials/Series/Soaps: _ Best Director; _ Best Original Screenplay; _ Best TV Series on Social Issues.
7.3 Special Jury Award: A special award could be given to any of the selected entries by the jury, based on its own criteria.
7.4 Audience Rating Award: An open vote may be taken from the audience for its rating of any of the selected entries during screening.
7.5 Honourary/Patron’s Award: Special recognition plaques to be awarded to individuals and corporate bodies for outstanding contributions to the film industry.
7.6 Certificates: A Certificate of Participation in the Festival shall be given to all the selected entries.
8. Film & Video Market/Exhibition, (FILMX)
Clause 8.1: A Film & Video Market/Exhibition (FilmX) is organized as part of the Zuma Film Festival (ZFF), 2006.
Clause 8.2: The FilmX is the business section of the Festival. It also incorporates an Open Market, designed as a market-place for buying and selling of films, audio – visual products and artifacts from different zones of the country and other parts of the world at subsidized rates. An exhibition of new products and technologies will also hold during the Festival.
Clause 8.3: The FilmX is open to film producers, directors, distributors, exhibitors, marketers, manufacturers, etc.
Clause 8.4: Participation in the FilmX attracts a standard non-refundable entry fee of N75, 000.00 or ,000.00, for local and foreign exhibitors respectively. Advance payment attracts a discount while allocation of spaces will be on first come, first served basis. (See FilmX Entry/Registration Form for more information).
