Un journaliste indépendant et un caméraman arrêtés aux abords du bureau de vote de Robert Mugabe
Reporters sans frontières exprime son inquiétude pour le journaliste indépendant Frank Chikowore, arrêté en compagnie d’un cameraman prénommé Edgar, le matin du 27 juin 2008, alors qu’ils couvraient l’arrivée du président sortant Robert Mugabe à son bureau de vote, à Harare.
« Victimes du climat d’oppression permanente que fait régner le gouvernement et ses forces de sécurité, les deux journalistes doivent être libérés dans les meilleurs délais. Nous appelons la justice zimbabwéenne à ne pas se rendre complice de ces abus et à protéger les rares journalistes indépendants qui exercent encore leur métier dans le pays », a déclaré l’organisation.
Frank Chikowore, journaliste freelance, et un cameraman prénommé « Edgar », ont été arrêtés par la police pour une raison inconnue, dans la matinée du 27 juin, à l’école primaire Mpofu, dans le quartier de Highfields, alors qu’ils couvraient le passage du président sortant Robert Mugabe à son bureau de vote. Les deux hommes ont été conduits au commissariat de Southerton. On ignore où ils sont détenus actuellement. Ils pourraient se trouver à la section « Law and Order » du commissariat central de Harare.

Freelance reporter and cameraman arrested at Mugabe’s polling station
Reporters Without Borders is concerned about freelance reporter Frank Chikowore and a cameraman so far identified only by the first name of Edgar, who were arrested this morning while covering President Robert Mugabe’s arrival at a polling station to vote.
« These journalists are the victims of the climate of constant oppression being imposed by the government and security forces, and should be released at once, » Reporters Without Borders said. « We appeal to the Zimbabwean courts not to be accomplices to these abuses, and to protect the few independent journalists still working in Zimbabwe. »
