The Gramophone Library of Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) will on Thursday, April 3 present a Gram Time Highlife Concert at the Cocoa Board Club House in Accra.
Highlife musicians on the bill, which would feature music from the 1950s to the 1970s, include the show master of Africa, Bob Pinodo, highlife legend Pat Thomas, Pace Setters and Bigshot Bands.
The Gram Library of the GBC is the largest collection of recorded music in Ghana and one of the largest archival collections in Africa. It contains thousands of gramophone records from local, foreign, and international recording companies, dating back to the 1940s, as well as vinyl records, cassettes, and CDs.
Apart from music, it also holds sound recordings (acetate records) of political speeches from the time prior and after Ghana’s independence. The project to digitize, archive, and safeguard the Gramophone Library of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation was started in October 2008. It is a joint project between GBC and the Centre for World Music at the University of Hildesheim/Germany under the direction of Dr Markus Coestner.
The concert is being sponsored by the Geothe-Institut in Accra.
