Murmures

Tanzanian literary magazine to launch in August
juin 2014 | Projets culturels | Littérature / édition | Tanzanie

English

Kalamu Magazine is focused on Tanzanian writing, with literature from

and inspired by Tanzania. The magazine publishes fiction, creative non-fiction, literary criticism, cultural news and reviews. Kalamu Magazine is an experiment in creating an exciting and engaging new literary space to showcase writing from the region as well as spur

literary discussions.

We are currently preparing for the first issue. Initially the magazine will be freely available online with plans to publish a print edition. In addition, we aim to provide the material across mobile devices to reach as wide an audience as possible. Currently Kalamu Magazine is a completely non-profit endeavor with all involved giving their time voluntarily, with future plans to be able to reimburse contributors.

Submissions

We currently accept submissions of all forms of creative writing, particularly prose, non-fiction, and reviews. Below are some general guidelines for the type of material we are ideally looking for. We accept both new and previously published material, providing permission has been given to reprint. There is no limit to how many submissions or type of submissions per author.

Submissions for the first issue should be received between June 13th to August 13th 2014. Submissions must be sent electronically, please send full text in an unformatted Word (or equivalent) document, Times New Roman 11pt, double-spaced. All submissions can be sent via Dropbox or e-mail to
[email protected]

Fiction and creative non-fiction

The ideal word length for both fiction and non-fiction pieces should be between 1,000 to 5,000 words. Fiction can be in any genre. Creative non-fiction can be on any topic however should

make use of literary techniques while being factually accurate. Translations of both fiction and non-fiction are welcome if permission has been granted from the original author.

Reviews & critiques

Reviews and critiques can be submitted of books, films and art (fine, photography, sculpture etc.). For a book/film to be reviewed it must be available to purchase within Tanzania.

Books/films by Tanzanian authors, about Tanzania, or published within Tanzania are preferred. Art that is reviewed should either be done by a Tanzania artist or artist in resident for over six months in Tanzania.

Reviews and critiques should be between 500-1500 words and accompanied with the following minimum information:

• For books

o Title

o Author o Publisher

o Purchase details (paper and online)

o ISBN number

o Print and/or online

• For film

o Title

o Director

o Production and/or distribution company

o Purchase details

• For art

o Where art can be viewed and/or purchased

o Contact details for artist or artist’s agent

Poetry

While we are open to all forms of creative writing, a limited number of poetry submissions will be considered. Currently there are several spaces within Tanzania for poetry and spoken work and the magazine aims to provide a platform for additional forms of creative writing.

Art & photography

Non-text submissions are welcome if accompanied by related fiction, creative non-fiction, and/or reviews. The guidelines for this are the same as above. The text submission does not necessarily have to be written by the artist/photographer.

Language

We aim to provide content as bilingually as possible, in both English and Swahili. When possible we will print in both languages. Work that is only printed in one language will ideally

be translated in a future issue. It is important to us that the content can be understood by as many people as possible, both within Tanzania and internationally.

Editorial policy

All submissions are subject to editorial review. We hope to not just provide a forum for writers to showcase their work but also editorial feedback to encourage authors to hone their craft.

While we will proofread all accepted submissions, please check spelling and grammar before submitting.

Be involved & participate

While we have a clear vision for the magazine, we are collaborative and open to anyone being involved and giving their time to the project. We are specifically looking for contributions

in the following areas:

Editorial – we are looking for people to find great new and previously published work (English and Swahili) as well as those with the language skills to work with authors to develop the work

before publication.

Translation – we are looking for anyone with a high command of both English and Swahili (written) to translate between the two languages.

Design – while we have a house style for the magazine we also want to be a space for designers to showcase their skills and are open to working with anyone who loves designing with text.
