La transe tribale traditionnelle souterraine, la nouvelle voie musicale du groupe abakuya

Abakuya est le projet musical de François Essindi et Jimi Sofo.
Les deux artistes se rencontrent au bord d’un fleuve à Bâle en Suisse en 2005 et décident
d’effectuer un voyage au Cameroun sur les terres des ancêtres Ekang. Dès leur retour en
2006, ils lancent le projet Abakuya, nom de la mascotte de l’Ozila, une danse
traditionnelle du sud Cameroun en voie de disparition.
Issue d’une fusion d’instruments traditionnels et modernes, électriques et acoustiques,
la musique d’Abakuya emporte l’auditeur dans un voyage rythmique redoutable et
enchanteur : un véritable appel à la danse et à la méditation.
Cette quête musicale produit un premier album « Primitive Love » en 2008, marquant le
retour aux traditions polyrythmiques de l’Afrique centrale.
Depuis, leur son évolue et s’enrichi de nouvelles textures, brodant finement une matière
électroacoustique sur des compositions tantôt douces, tantôt endiablées.
Arborant des instruments tribaux amplifiés aussi enchanteurs à la vue qu’aux oreilles, le
duo métissé nous ouvre à une musicalité nouvelle, véritable transe tribale urbaine.
La sortie d’un deuxième opus est prévue pour juin 2011 dont quelques titres sont
disponibles sur EP.

In 2005, Francis Essindi and Jimi Sofo met on the banks of a river in Basel, Switzerland and decided to travel together in Cameroon. Upon their return, they decided to launch their musical project Abakuya, named for the mascot of Ozila, a near-obsolete south Cameroonian traditional dance.
With an amalgamation of traditional and modern instruments, both electric and acoustic, Abakuya’s music carries the listener on a powerful and enchanting rhythmic journey: a real call to dance and meditation.
This journey produced a musical album « Primitive Love » in 2008, marking the return of the polyrhythmic traditions of central Africa. Since then, Abakuya’s sound has evolved and been enriched with new textures, weaving fine electro-acoustic compositions that are sometimes gentle, sometimes wild.
Featuring amplified tribal instruments which are as intriguing to the eye as they are enchanting to the ear, this mixed duet opens us to a new music, a true urban tribal trance.
The output of a second album is scheduled for June 2011 with a few titles already available on EP.
