Au programme de cette édition parrainée par l’actrice Liya Kebede : une compétition de courts métrages d’Afrique de l’Est, des workshops professionnels en direction de jeunes réalisateurs, et des programmes internationaux proposés par des festivals partenaires, notamment le festival de Cannes (Cinéfondation) et le festival international du court métrage de Clermont Ferrand, à qui Culturesfrance consacrera une carte blanche le 16 juin.

L’objectif de ce nouveau rendez-vous est triple :
Ø Proposer une programmation internationale au public éthiopien, qui sera accessible gratuitement.
Ø Accompagner les cinéastes et faire découvrir les métiers du cinéma au jeune public à travers l’organisation d’ateliers et de rencontres :
– Thèmes : scénario, story board, production, réalisation, direction de la photographie, montage, post-production et documentaire.
– Ateliers animés par : Alireza Khatami (réalisateur Iranien), Salem Mekuria (réalisatrice Ethiopienne), Eoin James O’Connor (scénariste irlandais), Pedro Pimenta (producteur mozambique), Nadia Ben Rachid (monteuse tunisienne), Christian Saaghard (réalisateur brésilien), Abderrahmane Sissako (réalisateur mauritanien), Daoud Aoulad Syad (réalisateur marocain), Charlotte Metcalf (réalisatrice anglaise).
Ø Promouvoir la création africaine dans le cadre d’une compétition de courts-métrages produits et réalisés en Afrique de l’Est.
* Deux prix seront décernés au terme de la compétition de la sélection des films d’Afrique de l’Est :
– Le premier prix invitera un réalisateur à se rendre en France au laboratoire Kinoworld du Festival Off Court de Trouville.
– Le second prix récompensera un réalisateur qui sera invité deux semaines à la Blue Nile Film Academy d’Addis Abeba.
* Un prix spécial du public pour l’ensemble de la programmation sera décerné à un réalisateur étranger qui sera invité en Ethiopie afin de rencontrer les professionnels du cinéma et des médias.
Le Festival sera inauguré le 14 juin par son Excellence Girma Woldeghiorghis, Président de la République fédérale démocratique d’Ethiopie et par Liya Kebede, actrice et top modèle éthiopienne.
Le 16 juin une projection exceptionnelle du film « Fleur du Désert » de Sherry Horman avec Liya Kebede donnera lieu à un débat en vue de sensibiliser la population et les organisations diverses au sujet de l’excision.
Le Festival « Images That Matter » est dirigé par la productrice Maji-da Abdi, initié par Culturesfrance, il est réalisé en partenariat avec le Festival international du court-métrage de Clermont-Ferrand et le Festival international du court-métrage de Sao Paulo et avec le concours de la Cinéfondation du Festival de Cannes, le Festival Africain de Tarifa et le Festival International du Film de Melbourne.

The association « IMAGES THAT MATTER » aims at establishing the First International short film Festival in East Africa:
* Encouraging the use of film as a personal, social and economic tool for development.
* Developing exchanges between African cinema professionals and encouraging new initiatives.
* Boosting production of short films internationally, in particular the African continent – in the context of unprecedented growth of the African broadcasting area.
Why a festival of short film ?
In Africa, no annual venue is devoted to the artistic expression of short films. The short film is the school of all confirmed directors and is often a test of ingenuity, creativity and resourcefulness. As such, it is particularly well uited to a market where talent is facing enormous challenges at each stage, from seeking funding to the projection room. For its size, the short film has great potential – it can easily find audience and buyers. For young filmmakers, it offers a lower cost opportunity to prove their talent.
The focus on Africa
The film industry in Africa is a potential just waiting to be developed with: Greater access to equipment More training facilities Policies that are becoming favorable to the growth of the industry.
AWARENESS, GUIDANCE, CONNECTION
These are the three key words for the development of African films. « Images That Matter » aims at promoting these key issues by establishing a core cinematic event in East Africa. Here, young filmmakers will meet their peers and open discussion with the international industry scene. This will shape and strengthen the African film industry. We believe that both African cinema and their counterpart will be equally enriched by these exchanges.
Target Audience
* High School and College students, encouraged by the Ministry of Education.
* General Ethiopian public (including foreign residents) sensitized by local media and mailing.
* Film professionals and students from East Africa.
* Invited professionals as menbers of the selection jury and workshop leaders.
