Ghadamès est une ville oasis libyenne, proche des frontières de Tunisie et d’Algérie. Cette ville fascinante, classée dans le patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO, grâce à son architecture unique, nous ouvre ses portes… Fondée il y a 4000 ans, Ghadamès fut surnommée « LA PERLE DU SAHARA » par les Italiens qui l’occupèrent de 1928 à 1943.
Ghadames passa ensuite sous contrôle militaire français jusqu’en 1951, année de l’indépendance de la Libye.
En 1980, les autorités libyennes créent une ville moderne à proximité, où vient s’installer la population de la vieille ville. Isolée au milieu du désert, Ghadames fut longtemps un carrefour caravanier essentiel en Afrique, jusqu’à son appauvrissement, au XIXe Siècle, après l’abolition de l’esclavage. Aujourd’hui, un projet ambitieux prévoit de faire revivre la vieille ville en y restaurant les canaux d’irrigation et en y développant le tourisme, seul secteur qui suscite l’intérêt de la population très jeune de Ghadames. Depuis 6 ans, le festival international de Ghadames contribue grandement à cet essor touristique…

Founded 4000 years ago, Ghadames was nicknamed « THE PEARL OF THE SAHARA » by the Italians who occupied it from 1928 to 1943.
Ghadames then passed under French military control until 1951, the year of Libyan independence.
In 1980, the Libyan authorities created a modern city nearby, where the population of the old city came to settle. Isolated in the middle of the desert, Ghadames was for a long time an essential caravan crossroads in Africa, until its impoverishment, in the 19th century, after the abolition of slavery. Today, an ambitious project plans to revive the old town by restoring the irrigation canals and developing tourism, the only sector that arouses the interest of the very young population of Ghadames.
Since 6 years, the international festival of Ghadames has contributed greatly to this tourist development…
